Position Highlights

The Chief of Staff to the President at the University of Arizona (U of A) is a senior leadership position responsible for supporting the President, advancing the work of the Office of the President, and serving as the liaison to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR).
This role is critical to ensuring the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the President's Office and the Chief of Staff serves as a trusted adviser to the President and his senior leadership team. The incumbent will lead and oversee strategic priorities and objectives for the President and the university, and as such, will demonstrate strong alignment with the U of A's mission, values, and strategic vision, and possess a record of success, sound judgment, integrity, discretion and flexibility working in a complex, dynamic, and demanding environment that requires complete confidentiality.

This Chief of Staff reports directly to the President, works alongside the President's senior leadership team, and interacts regularly with business, government, and community leaders, donors and alumni, and internal and external institutional stakeholders. The Chief of Staff collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to guide actions to realize the university's collective vision. This includes coordinating the execution of projects led by the President and responding to questions, matters of interest and importance, and requests on his behalf.

As a representative for the President's Office, member of the senior leadership team, and liaison to ABOR, this position cultivates a sense of shared purpose and proactively prepares the President and leadership colleagues for critical issues, priorities, and engagements. This highly visible position provides exceptional and professional service.

Duties & Responsibilities

Ensure that matters requiring the attention of the President are thoroughly developed, researched, and evaluated, and exercise sound judgement in assisting the President with communications.
Build and maintain successful working relationships and coordination with a wide range of offices, faculty, staff, and internal and external stakeholders, and serve as an institutional point of contact to resolve complex matters and advance strategic priorities.
Anticipate, identify, and troubleshoot issues of concern or significance, exercising discretion to provide timely information and necessary updates across multiple stakeholder groups.
Manage high-priority and timely issues and initiatives in close coordination with the President.
Oversee and contribute to the preparation, accuracy, and timeliness of presidential materials, briefings, and correspondence on university and strategic matters.
Participate in key meetings of faculty, staff, students, community members, and/or stakeholders on behalf of the President to ensure understanding of institutional priorities and to move forward strategic decision-making.
Provide direct support to the President at select appearances requiring travel, and frequent evening and weekend work.

  • Supervise the staff in the President's Office, helping to lead and sustain a culture of service, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Prioritize the workflow and align staff resources within the Office and advise the President on maintaining an efficient operation and organization.
  • Ensure the Office's resources are used efficiently and in line with the President's priorities, overseeing effective and accurate tracking of expenditures and projection of needs, including any collaborative projects with other units or external partners. Inform and advise the President on allocation of resources and annual prioritization for their use.
  • In collaboration with the Provost, CFO/COO, and other members of the senior leadership team, oversee institutional strategic planning and goal-setting and ensure alignment with ABOR. Monitor and report progress on goals to the President and obtain and organize data and other information needed to support the functions, initiatives, and priorities of the President.
  • Oversee presidential communications and collaborate with university partners to ensure that all communications for internal and external audiences consistently represent strategic priorities, reflect the vision of the President and ABOR, and meet high standards of excellence.
  • Oversee and participate in senior leadership meetings and retreats, including the preparation of agendas and materials.
  • Facilitate communication and workflow among all areas reporting to the President, and delegate assignments not requiring the President's direct involvement and track progress to ensure timely completion.
  • Represent the President's Office and function as the liaison to ABOR, sharing the perspectives and priorities of the President and demonstrating responsiveness and discretion to build trusted relationships with the regents and board staff.
  • Facilitate the President's engagement with U of A stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and representation of U of A's values and goals; in coordination with the senior leadership team, manage campus constituent inquiries or concerns.
  • Manage the preparation of materials for all ABOR meetings.
  • Interact with the public to provide information, build community relationships, and represent the Office of the President, as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
  • Minimum of 11 years of related work experience, including 7years of managerial experience, in large complex institutions or organizations,or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Requires experiencein leading multiple teams, projects, programs, and/or functions.
  • Record of accomplishment in developing effective andstrategic partnerships across diverse stakeholder groups, driving towardachieving successful results.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree.
  • 10 or more years of senior or executive level experience in higher education, non-profit, or public sectors.
