The Department of Astronomy has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to join their team.
The position primarily supports LINCC Frameworks in developing algorithms for the analysis of data from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and commissioning work for the Rubin Observatory in preparation for the LSST. When it enters operations in 2023, LSST will conduct the widest, fastest and
deepest survey of the southern sky carried out to date. It will identify tens of billions of stars, galaxies, and solar system objects. It will enable paradigm-changing research in the fields of weak lensing cosmology, galactic astronomy, transient and variable astronomical sources, and the contents of the solar system. The University of Washington is a major stakeholder in LSST; the Department of Astronomy hosts the Director (Prof. eljko Ivezic), groups working on the developing the LSST survey strategy and on commissioning the facility, and is responsible for the prompt processing system which will identify
transient, variable and moving objects in the LSST image stream.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
50%: Development of methods and procedures for commissioning the Rubin Observatory as well as analysis of the Rubin commissioning and operational data.
40%: Development of algorithms and science products for LINCC Frameworks
10%: Testing and observations to evaluate LINCC software performance
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Physics or Astronomy
Four years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.
Experience working with developing algorithms for real time image and telemetry analyst for astronomical surveys and with cloud based frameworks for terabyte scale data analysis is preferred.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
