Primary Purpose:
The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center (MSAHC or the Center) works to break down racial, social and economic barriers to health care and wellness for young people by providing vital services - high quality, comprehensive, integrated and confidential - for all who come to the Center or school based health facilities, at no cost to them. The MSAHC advances adolescent and young adult health as a national imperative by serving as a leading center of clinical care, specialized training, innovative research and advocacy.
The School Based Health Center (SBHC) Medical Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of the School-Based Health Center program and works collaboratively with MSAHC Deputy Medical Directors to ensure that medical services at the MSAHC School Based Health Centers are developed and managed in accordance with MSAHCs mission, strategic direction and business position.
The School Based Health Medical Director will direct activities of the medical and mental health staff and ensure that services are delivered in accordance with Mount Sinais policies and procedures, New York State regulations and guidelines, funder guidelines, and established best practices in adolescent medicine. In conjunction with the Deputy Medical Directors of the MSAHC the SBHC Medical Director will establish, approve, and implement policies related to the provision of medical services within the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center School Based Health Centers.
Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care
- Direct Outpatient Care at SBHCs and MSAHC and inpatient coverage at Mount Sinai;
- Provide coverage of school-based health center physicians and mid-level practitioners in the event of staff absence.
Administrative Duties
In collaboration with the MSAHC Deputy Medical Directors ensure that the MSAHC SBHCs operate effectively and efficiently and that interdisciplinary services become well-integrated. Help to ensure a patient-centric culture in which students in need of service are provided competent, caring and integrated care and where staff feel supported, appreciated, respected and can do their best work, and know how their specific work and the work of others contributes to success.
Supervision, Evaluation and Collaboration
- Supervise the overall development, management and evaluation of the SBHC medical practice including the following key positions:
- MSAHC SBHC physicians and mid-level practitioners
- SBHC practice manager - and perform duties of SBHC practice manager if the position is vacant
- Evaluate providers performance no less than annually, perform an OPPE semiannually for all clinical staff and conduct informal performance evaluation and review of charts on a regular basis;
- In concert with the Deputy Medical Directors at the MSAHC develop and implement changes as needed to existing medical care protocols consistent with established adolescent health medical practice standards;
- Implement quality assurance mechanisms and monitor the quality of medical care services;
- Represent SBHC providers perspectives in the areas of program development, policies and procedures, staff development and address difficulties that may arise in providers efforts to perform their job responsibilities;
- Implement and monitor systems to track timeliness and communication of all MSAHC specialty referrals;
- Work collaboratively with:
- MSAHC social work supervisor to optimize provision of mental health services in the school-based health center;
- MSAHC research team to evaluate and disseminate practice-based outcomes, and program evaluation initiatives;
- MSAHC Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Program Director in the provision of teaching and academic mentoring to faculty, fellows, residents and staff both at the SBHC as well as the MSAHC;
- The NYC DOH and NYC DOHMH in the evaluation and management of program activities.
Qualifications
- MD Degree with Board Certification in Adolescent Medicine
- Minimum of 5 years of combined clinical/administrative experience
