Description

The Auditor of Public Accounts is an independent agency responsible for performing audits of state and localgovernments. Our mission is to ensure that public resources are protected, accurately valued, properlyaccounted for, and effectively employed to raise the quality of life for Kentucky citizens. Our office conducts annual audits including fiscal courts, county clerks, and sheriffs. We also audit stateagencies as part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's annual financial statement audit. In addition to the morethan 600 annual audits issued, we conduct special examinations for waste, fraud, and abuse, and reviews ofvarious entities that receive public funds - these can range from large state agencies, to city governments orlocal fire departments.

This position is in a State Audit Branch, and therefore, is anticipated to work primarily on state agencyaudits. Public Accounts Auditor VIs work under limited supervision and direction of an Audit Manager. The positionrequires highly technical work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Examining technical or specialized functions of local and state governments.
  • Completing complex portions of audits, such as those relating to internal control, account balance testing, and compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Serving as auditor-in-charge on complex audits.
  • Acting in a supervisory role both administratively and on audit matters.
  • Preparing and reviewing workpapers.
  • Developing audit comments.
  • Assisting with auditor training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION:Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree (which includes twenty semester hours or thirty quarter hours in accounting).

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Must have five years of professional auditing experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:A master's degree, admitted to practice law in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, or certification as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Information Security Manager, or Certified Fraud Examiner will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment. Routine travel to and from the work site is required to perform on-site audit procedures and to attend training opportunities as assigned. Periodic overnight travel may occur, but is not typical.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
