Role Summary/Purpose:
The Special Process Engineer - Tooling designer brings specialized expertise to the company, providing support across all PTI repair lines, from ongoing operations to new product industrialization. This role ensures the implementation of advanced technologies and compliance with OEM standards, contributing to the company's overall operational excellence.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide tooling expertise across all product lines to ensure seamless integration and efficient production processes.
- Review the Repair Document from the Engine Manual and design tooling that complies with repair specifications and quality standards.
- Design fixtures, gauges, and tooling using SolidWorks; proficiency in AutoCAD and Inventor is a plus. Review and approve externally designed tools to ensure they meet project requirements.
- Collaborate with tooling suppliers to manage lead times, costs, and delivery schedules, ensuring alignment with project timelines.
- Provide operator training during the implementation of new programs and tooling, ensuring proper understanding and usage.
- Train PTI employees on the processes you own, fostering a collaborative relationship and maintaining regular communication with OEM process experts to drive continuous improvement.
- Develop and update work instructions for production cells to ensure consistent, efficient, and accurate manufacturing processes.
- Define and continuously improve operator training, qualification programs, and process planning, including the specification of tools, fixtures, and gauges for optimal performance.
- Participate in or lead capital expenditure projects from specification through installation, ensuring proper qualification of new equipment and compliance with PTI procedures.
- Contribute to New Product Industrialization by analyzing process, equipment, tooling capabilities, part flow, capital expenditure, and cost factors.
- Promote innovative repair solutions in collaboration with other engineering teams, aiming to reduce lead times, improve quality, enhance cost-effectiveness, and support EHS improvements to produce high-quality products efficiently.
- Provide expertise in supporting Safety and Quality functions through the integration of ISO/QC documentation and manufacturing method instructions.
- Conduct cost/benefit analysis for proposed changes to processes, consumables, and equipment, ensuring sound decision-making and resource allocation.
- Apply lean manufacturing principles and actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, enhancing process capability, reducing costs, and increasing production capacity.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college.
- Minimum of 3 years of tooling design experience, with proficiency in software packages such as SolidWorks; experience with AutoCAD and Inventor is a plus. Expertise in creating drawings according to ISO or ANSI standards, tooling design, and part reverse engineering.
- General understanding of various processes beyond your area of expertise, including surface treatments (chemical cleaning, stripping, blasting, high-pressure water jets), plasma spraying, conventional machining, CNC machining, TIG welding, EB welding, brazing, tooling design, painting, shot peening, heat treatments, general blending, dimensional inspection, CMM inspection, and NDT (FPI, MPI, X-ray, ECI, UT).
- Ability and willingness to work extended hours, including off-shifts, as business needs dictate.
- Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, Green Belt certification is highly desirable.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and able to extract and utilize annotations within Model-Based Definition (MBD).
- Thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Strong mechanical aptitude with a creative problem-solving approach.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively at all levels.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, able to convey technical information and ideas.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex situations and propose effective solutions.
- Proficient in technical writing, ensuring clear and accurate documentation of processes, procedures, and reports.
- Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team-based environment, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Proven ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring efficient use of resources and timely completion.
