ABOUT THE POSITION

The Greenlining Institute seeks a courageous, strategic, collaborative, and visionary leader in the role of Senior Director for Economic Equity to build on its legacy of advancing economic opportunity and empowering people of color; ensure consistent achievement of our mission and financial objectives; and position the organization for strategic growth while embodying an unrelenting focus on equity. The purpose of this key role is to build new strategies that hold the public and private sectors accountable for investing in communities of color and create more opportunities to build wealth through homeownership, jobs, technology and entrepreneurship. To achieve this aim, this role works closely with other internal policy staff, private and philanthropic funders and government agencies.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Strategic Direction and Oversight of Economic Policy
  • Provides strategic leadership in close coordination with other directors to advance local, state, and federal policies that advance racial and economic justice
  • Maintains a deep expertise in policy issues in the financial, technology, housing, employment, and small business sectors
  • Directs the team's legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts by identifying policy priorities, developing strategies, measuring outcomes to ensure goal achievement
  • Collaborates across functions to develop high-quality, proactive and responsive programs and policy strategy with corresponding organizational and financial plans
  • Oversees and monitors compliance with relevant federal, state and local regulations
  • Participates in organizational development and strategic planning activities to effectively advance Greenlining's vision and strategy


Staff Leadership & Management over Economic Equity Policy team
  • Directly supervises other mid-level leaders and staff working in Tech, Banking, Community Reinvestment, Small Business, Affordable Housing and other economic equity policy areas (includes supervision of union positions)
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Proactively aligns individual work plans with team level goals and organizational aims
  • Uses rigorous methods and systems to keep projects on track and achieve team goals
  • Cultivates growth in all core competency areas including Communication, Collaboration, Strategic Innovation, Technical Expertise, Adaptability and Accountability
  • Encourages professional development by promoting a growth mindset, providing stretch opportunities and coaching staff on career progression strategies
  • Support and maintain a diverse and inclusive workplace culture to attract, retain, and motivate an exceptional, high performing team
  • Provides leadership in applying and embedding a diversity, equity and inclusion framework to the workplace environment and experience
  • Oversee mentorship and supervision of Leadership Academy participants and provide support to team members working directly with Academy participants
  • Support staff alignment with organizational priorities and collaboration across teams
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities while adhering to the union collective bargaining agreement, Greenlining's policies and applicable employment laws


Fundraising and Financial Management
  • Prepares and manages the Economic team's budget to ensure organizational and programmatic needs are met while operating within legal and budget parameters
  • Maintain effective financial practices and stewardship of the organization's resources
  • Support the implementation of annual fundraising plans and other revenue models to ensure long-term financial sustainability
  • Work in partnership with the Development team to secure funding necessary to meet the Economic team's budgetary needs


Communications and Stakeholder Relations
  • Broadly and strategically promotes and positions the activities of the team's goals to ensure that the organization is consistently presented to relevant stakeholders
  • Guides the development of a coordinated communications strategy to effectively tell the story of Greenlining's work and incorporate strategic communications into our advocacy
  • Builds strong ties with and helps galvanize The Greenlining Coalition - a diverse group of community-based organizations that have banded together around a common vision of social justice
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other allied community groups and organizations
  • Represent the programs, policy positions, and point of view of the organization to agencies, community partners, funders, and the general public via writing, speaking, conferences and other engagements
  • Develop strong relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters
  • Write industry proposals and in-depth research papers with a strong and coherent policy and business analysis


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • 7-10 Years of Executive Non-Profit Leadership Experience with strong and significant track record of success (may include experience at the Associate Director level at Greenlining).
  • Bachelor's Degree required. Master's degree in a related field strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to Greenlining's mission, vision, values and goals and an understanding of the intersectionality in Greenlining's work, culture, and workplace
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing equity and inclusion for people of color
  • Deep experience and expertise in related policy area
  • Working knowledge of the local, regional and national landscape, including key stakeholders, data points and trends for the work done by Greenlining
  • Ability to effectively facilitate outcomes-oriented meetings, retreat activities, and/or workshops
  • A consensus-builder with strong emotional intelligence to relate to, understand and lead a team
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain people-centric engagement strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to confidently speak and represent the organization in local, regional and national forums
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as needed, to meetings and conferences throughout the state and possibly other locations
  • Fiscal management and fundraising experience including experience cultivating relationships with funders and providing strategic input into grant proposal development
  • Ability to evaluate existing systems, and develop and implement improvements
  • Courageous, strategic, collaborative and visionary leadership while being accountable, approachable, effective and inspiring
  • Ability to build and motivate strong, efficient teams that exhibit high levels of trust and accountability


This position reports to the Chief Impact Officer and is classified as Salaried, Exempt (FLSA).

The scope of responsibilities is not limited to those listed above and may change as organizational needs evolve. Specific work plan goals are developed each year to inform performance targets.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary based on experience. Superb benefits including health, vision and dental insurance premiums covered at 100% for employee and dependents as well as Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance. We provide a 5% annual salary match that is immediately vested to your 401(k) retirement plan. Work-life balance is supported with a 35-hour work week and hybrid work schedules.
