The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a Materials Researcher to serve as a Materials Research Engineer in the Ceramics Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic and Materials Performance Division.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to convert to a permanent appointment.

The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a Materials Researcher to serve as a Materials Research Engineer in the Ceramics Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic and Materials Performance Division.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conducts research on ceramics and ceramic matrix composites for high temperature and multifunctional applications targeted at a range of Air Force and Space Force systems.
- May perform research on process development and/or process modeling of ceramic matrix composites processing methods such as polymer matrix infiltration and pyrolysis, or chemical vapor infiltration
- May perform research on the development of robust, multifunctional ceramics to meet electromagnetic property requirements.
- Works both independently and as part of a team of researchers and program managers to develop new materials and processes for Department of the Air Force (air and space platform) applications
- Interacts with and develops collaborations with industrial, academic, and other government agency partners
- Disseminates research findings through publications and conference presentations

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional engineering or mathematics degree, in a relevant technical field, from an (ABET) accredited academic institution; if the highest earned S&E degree is a Bachelor's
- The applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-07-11 equivalent) level.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (Note: this is part of the onboard process after hiring selection).
Desired Qualifications
- Possess an advanced professional science and engineering (S&E) degree at the PhD level, in a relevant technical field (chemistry, chemical engineering, ceramic science and engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, or related fields), from an ABET accredited academic institution
- Interest and/or expertise in ceramic materials structure-morphology characterization methods, process science and engineering, process modeling, and/or multifunctional / electromagnetic properties
- Demonstrated ability to perform materials science research both independently and in collaboration with other researchers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
