The Director of Nursing assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services at a designated facility.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides leadership for nursing department personnel
- Develops, maintains, and implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy, and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal licensing/accreditation agencies laws, regulations and guidelines
- Evaluates the work performance of direct report nursing personnel and provides oversight of next-level personnel, determines merit increases, and implements discipline according to operational policies
- Participates in clients' medical care, addresses and resolves all concerns regarding medical care or treatment by nursing staff
- Develops strategic initiatives, implements new or revised programs, policies and procedures and monitors outcome and results
- Ensures appropriate staffing levels and actively participate with Recruitment in the recruiting and hiring process
- Interprets policies and procedures and communicates understanding to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation
- Facilitates and/or participates in regularly scheduled team meetings, multi-disciplinary review meetings and facility leadership meetings
- Ensures quality assurance/improvement through audits and other data, submit/review incident reports for the Medical department
- Oversees all Nursing/Medical department expenses, approves expenses and purchases and assists with budget development and maintenance
- Maintains appropriate professional boundaries with current clients, family members, referrals sources and vendors
- Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the practice of nursing
- Skill in organizational and time management and the ability to prioritize responsibilities
- Ability to make presentations before top management, public groups, and staff
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, financial reports, and legal documents
- Ability to demonstrate Practice-Based Client Care and Procedural Skills
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Skill in intermediate MS Office and electronic medical records
- Skill in professional interaction and communication with clients
- Demonstrate proficiency with OSHA's Universal Precautions and the ability to train other staff members on those procedures
- Availability for alternate, evening and weekend shifts may be required to meet state and regulatory agency requirements and business necessity
Job Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Bachelors in nursing required; Master's preferred
Certifications:
- Current RN or LVN/LPN licensure
- Current BLS/CPR certification
Experience:
- 5+ years' experience in nursing management
Applicable State Requirements
- Must meet pre-employment and maintain all applicable state and job related guidelines for background screening, fingerprinting, drug test, health screening, DMV, Insurance, CPR/Basic First Aid and license/credential verifications.
