Job Summary: This position is responsible for engineering development, research testing, operational support and equipment maintenance in the Ontario Tech ACE core research facility and Integrated Research & Training Facility, a world-class research, development, design and training center focused on the next-generation Mobility, Aerospace, Civil-Architectural, Human Factors and other product development. The work elements will include engineering, designing, developing, setting up experiments, and the operation and maintenance of advanced engineering chambers and projects. This includes the Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel, Climatic Chambers, Climatic 4-Poster, Hemi-Anechoic chamber and the Multi-Axis Simulation Table (MAST).

This position reflects the evolving needs for electrical/controls engineering and related technical support work that reflects research and development and operational support needs at ACE. The suitable candidate will provide expertise that includes a combination of mechatronics engineering and related technical leadership plus technical guidance for support personnel, (mainly electricians) involved in the support of research, fabrication, build and other related activities for the ACE facility and focuses on electrical technologies. Responsibilities include assisting in researching, specifying the design and sourcing of equipment and suppliers and development of operational processes and procedures as well and leading of experiential engineering and outreach activities.

The individual will be supervised and mentored by a licensed engineer and other technical staff. This position will serve as a bridge for hands-on controls work, and supports compliance with electrical regulatory requirements for safety at ACE and Ontario Tech University. This includes direct involvement with engineering operations, industry, industry/academic collaborations, regulatory agencies and Ontario Tech academic researchers and personnel.

The position reports to the ACE Senior R&D Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities & Nature of work:

Responsibilities will include working on the next generation of zero-emissions vehicles (electric, hydrogen, etc.) and supporting infrastructure as well as connected and autonomous vehicles. The individual will also be actively engaged in supporting the next phase of autonomous technologies and control and instrumentation advancements. This will also involve working directly with researchers & clients to develop advanced engineering designs as well as developing work practices and procedures to enhance and adapt to client demands.

Prototyping, innovating, improving, creating, designing, building, mentoring of students, and supporting research and training for mobility, architectural/civil, defense, media, human performance, human factors, aerospace, UAV, and other opportunities in an ever-expanding number of market segments. This engineering position also requires knowledge and experience working with various regulatory agencies such as the Electrical Safety Authority and TSSA.

Responsibilities also include:
  • Customer interaction.
  • Operational leadership.
  • Support, development of tests and programs, including instrumentation, engineering development, and test development for the equipment based on customer requirements.
  • Management, understanding and operation of all the process equipment including the CAWT, 4-Poster & MAST with a focus on controls and instrumentation.
  • The position will be for an individual with demonstrated engineering expertise in automation controls, programming, and electrical design and fundamental understanding of mechanical and electrical systems. The ability to conceive, design and improve existing electrical systems and controls to incrementally improve and modernize existing systems.
  • This position will require familiarity and demonstrated experience with applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • This position requires familiarity with high voltage, battery and battery management systems.
  • The competency to oversee electrical and mechanical sourcing designs and installations.
  • This will also include client management, the setting up of physical properties for testing, and supporting vehicle/physical property issues and new business/research opportunities.
  • This position will include project management and assuming leadership of elements of planned maintenance and unplanned maintenance, and calibration as well as equipment upgrades of process equipment.
  • This position may include supervision, resource development/training and require an active role in operational and emergency response.


Required Skills & Experience:
  • Minimum three years' work experience as an engineer or equivalent in an automotive, manufacturing and / or vehicle product development
  • Demonstrated competency in the field of electrical controls, manufacturing, automation, or product development environment.
  • Experience with machine and instrumentation controls and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in instrumentation, wiring, and equipment build and commissioning.
  • Experience with Electrical Safety Authority code requirements.
  • Experience with industrial automation, machine controls, equipment calibration, commercial refrigeration equipment controls, and facility and maintenance engineering.
  • Experience with power distribution equipment, power electronics, and controls.
  • Experience in power monitoring software/hardware and power factor correction strategies.
  • Experience in automotive design, development, and testing.
  • PLC programming experience in an industrial setting is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in controls & instrumentation.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, and basic programming skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
  • Good problem-solving skills, organizational skills, and the ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • First Aid and emergency response training is preferred.

ACE is a multi-shift operation that includes afternoons and weekends. The candidate must be flexible and prepared to work periodic afternoon or evening shifts, and irregular hours as operational needs require. There may also be occasional travel requirements. Facility operational hours are from 8 am to 12:00 midnight with core day shifts from 8am to 4pm and other period shifts including 4pm-12 midnight or 12 noon to 8 pm (Monday -Friday) but occasionally it may include weekends. This position requires employees be physically present on-site.

Required Education:
  • Completion of a four-year BSc degree in Engineering (Aeronautical/Aerospace, Automotive, Mechanical or Mechatronics preferred)
  • Engineering degree must be recognized for PEO accreditation.
  • Master Electrician or Engineering Technologist (preferred).
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
