GMC has an opening for Senior Aviation Architect to lead the design and development of aviation-related projects, leveraging your expertise in architectural design, engineering principles, and aviation regulations. This position can be located in any of our offices, preferably, Birmingham, Pensacola, Nashville or Atlanta. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to create innovative and functional airport facilities that meet the unique demands of the aviation industry.

Essential functions and responsibilities:
  • Project Leadership: Lead the architectural design process for aviation projects from conception to completion, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budgetary constraints, and quality standards.
  • Client Collaboration: Engage with clients to understand their vision, requirements, and objectives for aviation projects. Provide expert advice and guidance throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring client satisfaction and project success.
  • Team Management: Mentor and guide junior architects and multidisciplinary teams involved in aviation projects. Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment to encourage creativity, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Design Development: Develop innovative and sustainable design solutions for airport terminals, hangars, control towers, and other aviation-related facilities. Integrate principles of architectural design, engineering, and aviation regulations to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Work closely with the aviation engineering group on airside projects
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of local, national, and international regulations, codes, and standards governing airport design and construction. Ensure that aviation projects comply with relevant safety, accessibility, and environmental requirements.
  • Technical Expertise: Utilize advanced software tools and technologies for architectural design, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), CAD software, and simulation tools. Apply knowledge of structural systems, building materials, and construction techniques to optimize project outcomes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with airport authorities, government agencies, aviation consultants, and other stakeholders to address project challenges, obtain necessary approvals, and facilitate project progress.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough reviews and evaluations of architectural designs, drawings, and specifications to identify and resolve design issues, discrepancies, and conflicts. Ensure that final deliverables meet quality standards and design intent.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks, constraints, and obstacles associated with aviation projects. Develop mitigation strategies and contingency plans to minimize project disruptions and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Industry Networking: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the aviation industry, including airport operators, airlines, regulatory authorities, and industry organizations. Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in airport design and construction.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional licensure as an architect (RA or equivalent) is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in architectural design, with at least 5 years of focus on aviation projects.
  • Design experience in aviation-related projects including passenger terminals, fixed-base operator terminals, MRO facilities, and storage hangars
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing complex aviation projects from concept to completion.
  • Strong understanding of aviation regulations, standards, and best practices related to airport design and construction.
  • Proficiency in architectural design software, such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or similar tools.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality architectural solutions.
  • Flexibility to travel as needed for project meetings, site visits, and client presentations.
