YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE

We are looking for a Operations Manager, Chemistry in 106 - 8255 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, BC V3N 5G4 CAN. Your mission will be to:

Purpose (Objective):
This role is responsible for managing the chemistry department and providing direction and leadership to supervisors and laboratory staff while working with closely with the Laboratory Director to meet financial, quality, productivity, and technical goals for the company.

Main Activities:
Oversee a team of laboratory supervisors and staff while ensuring daily quality and productivity requirements are met
Follow Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions
Coaching and mentoring direct reports
Interpret analytical data and provide guidance to the team where needed
Authorize test results for final release on client reports
Provide project management on special projects when required
Participate in client meetings by providing technical guidance, data interpretation, and problem-solving when required
Coordinate activities between the customer care teams and the laboratory
Work within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other systems for managing laboratory samples and analytical testing
Participate in human resources related activities such as recruitment, disciplinary actions, and compensation discussions
Investigate new technologies for their implementation into the laboratory
Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes
Support research and development initiatives and projects
Support the Laboratory Director by providing regular feedback on operational metrics such as on-time-delivery, quality performance, technical initiatives, and human resources

YOUR PROFILE

Communication:
Frequent contact with our customer care teams and senior management through e-mail, video conferencing, and other communication tools is required to ensure timely communications with all stakeholders.

Knowledge:

Profile:
The incumbent has a minimum of 2 to 5 years of work experience in a fast-paced commercial analytical laboratory along with a bachelor's degree in science or the equivalent work experience in a relevant field. A master's degree is an asset but not required. The incumbent has lead a team of professionals in a laboratory environment and has a practical knowledge of analytical chemistry, particularly in food science and food safety and has experience working with consumer food products, dietary supplements, and natural health products combined with a broad knowledge of how they are manufactured, distributed and consumed. Accustomed to working with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions, and other controlled documents.

The incumbent is able to make sound operational decisions based on technical and quality reasons. Excellent interpersonal skills are required to work effectively with external and internal customers and clients. A good financial understanding of running a laboratory as a business is an asset.

Required Skills:
The incumbent is used to being in a leadership position in a laboratory setting and taking full responsibility and accountability for all their decisions. This person is organized, a good communicator, and has excellent interpersonal skills. Adept in computer skills, technical ability, a fast learner, and not afraid of change.

Management:
The incumbent manages all activities of the department employees including, but not limited to, recruitment, coaching and mentoring, disciplinary actions, reward and recognition, and compensation discussions.

Work Environment:
The incumbent works in a fast-pace commercial analytical laboratory with multiple priorities and deadlines. A normal workday consists of 8 hours but may be longer in order to meet daily priorities. Much of the day is spent coordinating activities in a shared office environment using at Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and office productivity software. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when working directly in the laboratory. There may be some controlled exposure to chemicals such as solvents, acids, bases, and other reagents. Overnight travel may be required once or twice a year to attend meetings and professional events.

The pay range for this role is $85,000-$100,000 annually CAD.
