SUMMARY:

The Chief Scientific Advancement Officer (CSAO) is responsible for programs and initiatives of the American Mathematical Society that enhance the mathematics community. The CSAO leads the Division of Scientific Advancement comprised of three mission-centered units: the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; the Office of Government Relations; and the Office of Programs and Professional Services. The work of the division supports and champions mathematicians, mathematics programs, mathematics education, and research in the mathematical sciences. The CSAO has responsibility for establishing a clear vision for the work of the division and its alignment with the strategic priorities of the AMS. The CSAO will be engaged in the crafting of grant proposals that support new and continuing efforts of the Society; they will partner with colleagues in other professional societies to support mathematics; and they will be a voice within the mathematics community that advocates for creating an even more welcoming and supportive community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategy & Planning
  • Partner with other senior leaders in strategic planning and implementation efforts and in identifying opportunities to develop new or improve existing programs, products, and services.
  • Work collaboratively within and across divisions to establish a vision for the work of the three units comprising this division: the Office of Programs and Professional Services (OPPS), the Office of Government Relations (OGR), and the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI).
  • Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of OPPS, OGR, and OEDI.
  • Support the development of a data strategy to ensure that the data collected about the profession is useful and available to the mathematics community.

Management
  • Manage, support, and ensure the ongoing professional development of the leaders of OPPS, OGR, and OEDI.
  • Supervise recruitment, development, retention, and organization of all staff in in the division in accordance with budgetary objectives and personnel policies.
  • Lead the development of the division's annual operating and capital budgets and ensure that they are properly tracked and controlled.
  • Ensure that initiatives, programs, and events offered by the Division of Scientific Advancement enhance the mathematics community.
  • Keep current on the evolving needs of the mathematics community, ranging from ways to support individual mathematicians to departments and programs to the field as a whole.

Partnerships & External Support
  • Work with colleagues within the Division of Scientific Advancement and across the Society to craft funding proposals that, if successful, would support the division's efforts on behalf of the mathematics community.
  • Establish, grow, and sustain collaborative partnerships with other societies whose missions align with aspects of the American Mathematical Society.
  • Develop a strategy that leverages external funding and collaborative partnerships to amplify the efforts of the AMS in advancing research and creating connections.

The CSAO will perform other or similar related duties as requested or assigned.

TRAVEL:

The CSAO will be expected to travel to the offices in Washington, D.C., and to some professional conferences (possibly international), usually less than four weeks in any year.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Reports to chief executive; works collaboratively with staff across the Society to sustain as well as plan and implement programs and initiatives that advance the Society's Mission; and cooperates with staff in other departments on relevant projects.

External: Support AMS committees and other groups; communicate with AMS board members and other governance leaders about the work of the Division of Scientific Advancement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The CSAO has three direct reports and oversees a unit of 20 people in total (including the CSAO).

  • Doctoral degree in the mathematical sciences or a closely related field.
  • Familiarity with the mathematics community and its needs.

  • Direct experience with the kinds of activities performed in the Division of Scientific Advancement.
  • Experience with institutional grants, with a preference for experience preparing proposals and shepherding externally funded projects.
  • Experience and demonstrated stature as a professional mathematician in academic, industrial, or governmental employment.
  • Evidence of broad knowledge of the Society and its mission, the mathematics profession, and related disciplines and organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and managerial accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated ability to sustain teamwork and partnerships with employees, stakeholders, and peers.
