POSITION PURPOSE

The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition (MET) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 position to support studies within the Valencia Laboratory. Housed within the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute at the South Lake Union campus, the Valencia laboratory's field of research is in the field of mitochondrial metabolism.

The purpose of the research this position supports, is to investigate how mitochondrial function adapts in response to obesity and weight loss and aging, and how these adaptations mediate cardiometabolic risk. Work will be done in one or two different labs within the UW SLU.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The major duties of this position include running experiments for multiple projects using high-resolution fluo-respirometry to assess mitochondrial function in human and animal tissues and cell lines. This advanced, highly specialized position requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop improved and more effective technical methodologies. The work is conducted independently, with only minor oversight. Additional duties include data collection and statistical analysis, tissue dissections, cell culture, processing of cells and tissues for respirometry, managing animal dietary experiments, and handling the performance of routine biological assays. Furthermore, this position requires proper coordination with our collaborators in shared projects. In addition to the recording, collection, organization, analysis and interpretation of data, this position will also have some administrative responsibilities and will contribute to presentations, manuscripts, and grants.

  • Processing samples for high-resolution respirometry.
  • Rodent tissue dissection.
  • Microdissection of tissue for permeabilization (i.e. permeabilized fiber preparation).
  • Isolation of peripheral mononuclear cells from human blood.
  • Enzymatic assays, protein assay, ELISAS.
  • Western blotting and RT-PCR.
  • Record, collect, organize, analyze, interpret, and present data.
