Are you passionate about, research and development and advancing electrochemical research through surface nanoscience and its applications in health and environmental fields? The Diamond Technologies Research Group, Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a skilled and motivated Research Scientist to contribute to our cutting-edge plasma science and diamond processing research projects. As Research Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in plasma research in diamond reactors to achieve optimized growth of a variety of diamond materials ranging from single crystalline, nanocrystalline to nano particles. You will perform plasma spectroscopy, materials characterization and also interact with our systems group for hardware integration to perform plasma science experiments. You will also drive process development and innovative solutions in chemical-mechanical polishing of single crystalline diamonds meeting customer needs for novel applications.

Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a highly motivated, reliable, and technically competent individual to join our team as a Research Scientist. In this role you will play an integral part within our diverse team of experts facilitating international business coordination between U.S. Industry, Fraunhofer USA and Fraunhofer transatlantic affiliates. You will be part of a unique process combining industry customer discovery with technology matchmaking of the world's largest applied research and development portfolio.
This is a salaried position offering benefits that include health and dental insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, and a pension plan. The business core working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours. Project-dependent work hours may be shifted outside of the core working hours as needed.

Responsibilities:
- Uphold lab upkeep and maintenance standards to ensure a safe and efficient research environment
and management of ongoing projects - Advancing plasma science and physics expertise at the center by performing plasma spectroscopy research, develop EM and plasma models of the reactors
- Synthesize and analyze diamond materials; perform experimental designs to optimize diamond properties
- Support development of new chemical-mechanical polishing processes for diamond polishing
- Interact with a variety of groups from academia, industry, and government
- Manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications
- Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and interns
- Technical report writing of engineering projects
- Ensure project and lab compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program (ISO9001) requirements
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- PhD. required in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related engineering or science field with a strong background in plasma science or equivalent experience.
- Prior experimental expertise in diamond synthesis
- Prior expertise in gas phase and surface kinetics in plasma environments
- Prior expertise in electromagnetics and plasma modeling
- Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
- Ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems
- Able to set priorities and adapt to changing needs as well as the proven ability to function well in as fast-paced environment
- A proven record of establishing and maintaining a safe laboratory and workplace environment
- Able to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse, and international team
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Prior working experience in diamond nanoparticle synthesis
- Prior working experience in material characterization, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and X-Ray Diffraction
- Prior experience with operation, assembly, and maintenance of vacuum systems is strongly desired
