The expected salary ranges for this role on hire are:

Assistant County Attorney I: $77,738 - $104,639

Assistant County Attorney II: $88,406 - $129,827

Assistant County Attorney III: $108,687 - $164,999

WHO WE ARE

The Office of the County Attorney provides legal advice and representation to all County departments, agencies, instrumentalities, boards, and commissions, including the County Council, and all their employees. A full description of the Offices' work is available here.

The Office also provides legal defense for cases involving Montgomery County and other governmental entities that participate in the Montgomery County Self-Insurance Program (including the Board of Education for Montgomery County, Montgomery College, and the Housing Opportunities Commission) and all their employees.

Attorneys in the Division of Labor Relations and Public Safety provide legal advice and represent the Montgomery County Government in all labor and personnel matters. They also serve as general counsel for the following County agencies, Montgomery Fire and Rescue Services, Office of Human Resources, Office of Labor Relations, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the Police Department and its Internal Affairs Division.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Montgomery County Government - The Office of the County Attorney is currently recruiting for an experienced full-time attorney for its Division of Labor Relations and Public Safety.

What You'll Be Doing

The Attorney will act as general counsel and provide legal advice on labor and employment matters, as well as, defend or prosecute cases involving the County, Self-Insurance Fund agencies, and their employees before State and Federal courts.

Although you could be called upon to handle any matter assigned to the Division, the Office anticipates that you would act as general counsel and provide legal advice on labor and employment matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education - Graduation from an accredited university school of law
    • Membership in the Maryland State Bar, or, membership in the bar of any other state in the U.S. in which case Maryland State Bar Membership must be obtained during the probationary period
  • Experience:
    • At the Assistant County Attorney I level, Grade 24: One (1) year of post-degree experience as a law clerk or in a similar capacity.
    • At the Assistant County Attorney II level, Grade 27: Two (2) years of professional experience as an attorney, including trial experience.
    • At the Assistant County Attorney III level, Grade 32: Thorough (four (4) years) experience as an attorney, including some specialized (one (1) year) experience involving either local government law or labor relations and public safety.
  • Equivalency - None
  • LICENSE: Membership in the Maryland State Bar.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Referred List, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Referred List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Employee-labor relations experience,
  • Union negotiation experience
  • Employment law experience.

Leave Benefits

Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Retirement Benefits

All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
