Description:

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Chicago (https://www.czbiohub.org/chi) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to make breakthroughs in medicine and develop new technologies, frequently in collaboration with our partner universities. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision
  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub Chicago facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is seeking outstanding scientists and engineers at any career stage to join the launch of the Chicago Biohub. Candidates should have a background in a quantitative field or engineering, such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Computational Biology. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated the creative use of computational approaches to enhance our understanding of the immune system and expertise in developing and applying deep learning techniques to biological data. Relevant areas of experience include language/sequence modeling, graph embeddings, representation learning, generative models, and self-supervised learning techniques. However, specific domain knowledge is less important than genuine intellectual curiosity, strong research skills, and a track record of scientific innovation and achievement.

CZ Biohub Chicago Fellows will actively participate in (including hands-on in the laboratory) a generously funded team conducting innovative and impactful research. The Fellow's focus should be aligned with the Biohub's scientific mission to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and to develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of achievement and a commitment to work collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

You will
  • Be a highly motivated researcher who will contribute to the innovative, vigorous and collaborative research program aligned with the mission of CZ Biohub
  • Apply state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to solve key immunology problems
  • Develop and maintain machine-learning models to enhance our understanding of inflammation
  • Share findings with the scientific community through publications, blog posts, open-source code, and conferences
  • Communicate progress and results with colleagues and the leadership team

You have

Essential -
  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, or a related field with an AI/ML focus
  • 1 year of machine/deep learning and/or neural network experience
  • Track record of publications in the field of machine learning applied to biological (omic and/or imaging) data
  • An appetite to follow and build on state-of-the-art research in machine learning, multimodal reasoning, and representation learning
  • Demonstrated leadership, innovation, and ability to work collaboratively
  • Supervisory or mentoring experience is a plus but not required
  • A vision to carry out or continue innovative and impactful research
