Who are we looking for?

Our office in Toronto, Markham, Mississauga and Whitby, ON is looking to bring onboard a Counsel - Large Infrastructure to support deliver legal, risk and compliance services to GHD's Canada-based Infrastructure business and commercial management team. As a Counsel, you will be responsible provision of legal, risk and compliance advice in support of the business sectors commercial transactional work; strategic support in relation to project delivery disputes and claims management; delivery of legal, risk and compliance support to the Canadian operations and project personnel, and Commercial Management leaders on an as required basis; and development of area(s) of substantive legal expertise.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

Commercial transactional risk allocation - strategic pursuit advice and contract review:
  • Assist Business Group Leaders, Project Directors, Project Managers and/or Team Leaders in their review and negotiation of legal documents with a view to achieving 'best for GHD' outcome and adherence with GHD's policies and protocols
  • Assist in the development and implementation of project risk management procedures
  • Management of all Variation, Change or Claim related negotiations, including issuance of all variation related correspondence
  • Provide regular reports and updates to project stakeholders and appropriate executive leadership (including Senior in-house Counsel).
  • Liaise and manage relationship with assigned external counsel on Large Infrastructure projects from contract negotiation to project completion, and if necessary through corresponding litigation process.

Risk mitigation - project delivery disputes and claim management:
  • Provide legal support and strategic risk management advice on a real time basis in relation to challenged, higher risk, and more complex projects during the currency of project delivery, with a view of facilitating early de-risking of disputes and preservation of client relationships
  • Collaborate with the Project Director (and/or other project personnel) in generation of 'lessons learned' in respect of material E&O claims matters upon claim close-out

Support of the senior Operations and project personnel and Business Services leaders:
  • Provide legal, risk and compliance training to the region as required and be readily available for contractual and risk discussions and coaching of BGLs and technical staff

Development of area(s) of specialized substantive legal expertise:
  • Build on experience and expertise in relation to construction law/infrastructure projects
  • Development of specialized area of legal expertise in relation to variance and change negotiations
  • Engage in active collaboration with Americas LRC Team colleagues in relation to specialized areas of expertise

What you will bring to the team:

Career experience:
  • Three plus years legal experience, preferably in an engineering or construction law environment

Substantive legal expertise:
  • Sound understanding of contractual and insurance issues relating to large infrastructure projects in the design-build sphere

Problem solving:
  • Ability to identify solutions while considering legal, commercial and project considerations

Practice management competencies:
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a time efficient manner
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of working capability on company legal, risk and compliance technology platforms
