What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Test Engineering group (E-14) of the Engineering, Technology and Design Division (E) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to support the weapons mission. The successful applicant will be engaged in component, subsystem, and system testing within the Data Acquisition and Instrumentation team. Testing activities require working in a team environment with technologists, engineers, and scientists within LANL, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and other institutions to perform successful experimental operations. These operations include, but are not limited to: specification of instrumentation, instrumentation application, and fielding and collection of experimental data. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to travel periodically to other sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).
R&D Engineer 1 ($92,300 - $151,000)
The Data Acquisition Engineer is primarily responsible for supporting the achievement of programmatic objectives through the testing and experimental process: sensor suite planning with the customer, implementing quality assurance requirements, instrumentation layout/installation, sensor interfacing, data acquisition, preparation of close-out test documentation. Job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, high explosives (HE), and other hazardous materials.
R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, the Data Acquisition Engineer will also assist in the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, validation, and implementation of emerging engineering tools to address critical technical problems. The engineer will also contribute to the preparation of journal papers, reports, and contrbutions to discipline-specific meetings and colloquia, professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external special interest groups.

In addition to the above requirements, higher-level qualification requires contributions to R&D initiatives through research, design, testing, and/or validation of engineering solutions. The candidate should have experience developing technical products (e.g., journal papers), expertise in data acquisition, and mentoring skills to support junior staff and peers or provide peer reviews.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Desired qualifications include direct experience with data acquisition and analysis in areas such as shock, vibration, thermal, explosives, or control systems, and/or with the ability to troubleshoot analog and digital circuits. Experience developing technical drawings, schematics, documentation, and reports is beneficial. Further preferred qualifications include active participation in professional societies, engagement with the National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy complex, or involvement in special assignments. An active Q Clearance is preferred.
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
