Position Summary

The Vice President oversees the development, implementation, and support of membership, wellness, Active Older Adult, and aquatics initiatives across the YMCA of Greater San Francisco. This role operates through leadership, influence and collaboration with Executive Directors, POD leaders, and program directors. The VP supervises and liaises with all member-facing administrative, technical, service, and support functions, while also providing leadership and operational support for multiple branches. Key responsibilities include staff supervision, leadership and oversight of: the Member Experience POD as well as organization-wide Health Initiatives, Aquatics, and Active Older Adult strategies and activities as well as, volunteer and community engagement, program development and operations, and financial management. The VP directly supervises Branch Executive Directors to ensure the successful achievement of branch operating plans.

This role focuses on advancing the purpose, goals, and objectives of the organization by engaging with members and leading diverse initiatives. The Vice President works closely with the Board of Directors to develop policies and ensures their effective execution. They must deeply understand the YMCA as a volunteer-driven organization and appreciate the respective roles of volunteers and staff. Additionally, they must remain attuned to the community's needs, challenges, and available resources, both human and physical.

The VP requires a strong foundation in management, particularly in administering the business affairs of the YMCA, within its local structure and broader national and global contexts. As a human-relations-focused position, the role demands a comprehensive understanding of public perception of the YMCA, relationships between staff and volunteers, and effective intra-staff dynamics.

The VP must skillfully delegate operational responsibilities and guide all actions with a clear focus on the YMCA's long- and short-term objectives, ensuring alignment with the strategic goals outlined in the Branch plan.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Oversight
  • Advances the health and wellness agenda for the YGSF including Health Initiatives, Whole Person Health, Health Partnerships including Health Plans, Third Party Payers, and corporate wellness.
  • Provides leadership to and oversight of the Membership Experience POD and departments, the Health Initiatives Departments, and Aquatics Departments.
  • Provides direction for setting and achieving the strategic plan, and annual operating plans, in conjunction with branch and POD leadership.
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), President's Team, and Operations team in support of the overall objectives of the Association.

Operational and Program Management
  • Develops and supports the creation of the membership budget with the support of the branch and POD leadership.
  • Supports the membership, wellness, and aquatic operations of the branch facilities and assigned programs, which may include health and physical education, aquatics, membership, and special events programs.
  • Supervises member-facing administrative and coordinating activities at the association level.
  • Supports those who work with the Facilities department in the management and maintenance of the branch related to member acquisition and retention.

Staff and Volunteer Development
  • Provides leadership and support for branch and POD executives in hiring, training, and evaluating staff and volunteers.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and staff development.

Community Engagement and Collaboration
  • Develops relationships with community leaders and promotes collaboration with other agencies and organizations, specifically focused on community health and health equity.

Marketing and Member Acquisition
  • Creates, develops, and implements the marketing and acquisition for membership and wellness programs in concert with the Marketing department.


Salary $195,000 to $208,000

Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in business, human development, psychology, physical education, recreation, human services, wellness, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional management experience, including YMCA Executive Director experience or a comparable role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in membership, wellness, and program development, as well as financial development, board engagement, marketing, public relations, fiscal management, human resources, risk management, and staff supervision.


Preferred Qualifications (Optional)
  • Expertise in holistic health, whole-person health, or related disciplines.
  • Proficient in innovation, program design, and ensuring model fidelity.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification is preferred.
