Position Summary

The Lead CFD Modeler provides technical leadership and oversight for a team of CFD modelers, ensuring alignment on best practices, engineering standards, and growth opportunities. They are responsible for managing CFD modeling projects, including budgets, schedules, and deliverables while collaborating with engineering, operations, and management teams. The Lead CFD Modeler also works closely with construction teams to integrate CFD modeling into project designs, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective solutions.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

Leadership & Team Development
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the CFD modeling team.
  • Develop team goals, establish expectations, and identify growth opportunities for staff.
  • Lead team meetings and resource planning to ensure effective allocation of resources.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning by creating training content and enhancing technical skills.

CFD Modeling Projects
  • Manage CFD modeling projects, ensuring alignment with client objectives, timelines, and budgets.
  • Perform advanced airflow CFD modeling, including simulations for interior and exterior spaces, with a focus on data centers.
  • Conduct model runs, sensitivity analyses, and quantitative evaluations to optimize designs.
  • Ensure calibration of models to reflect real-world conditions post-construction and commissioning.

Standards & Innovation
  • Develop and maintain technical CFD modeling standards, templates, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with sector engineering and construction teams to ensure seamless integration of modeling standards.
  • Stay current with industry trends and innovations to enhance team capabilities and project outcomes.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Function as the primary point of contact for CFD modeling services, delegating tasks and opportunities effectively.
  • Prepare and present detailed modeling reports to clients and stakeholders using clear technical narratives, visualizations and graphics.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners to support and expand business opportunities.

Technical Expertise
  • Evaluate and recommend CFD modeling software and tools for quality and efficiency.
  • Perform design optimization, assess system capacities, and evaluate solutions for new construction or system upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes and ordinances, including ASHRAE standards.
  • Use scripting and automation (e.g., Python, C++) to enhance modeling workflows and accuracy.

Required Education, Experience, Licenses & Technical Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field required. 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in CFD modeling and mechanical design required.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred.
  • Experience in data center and mission-critical projects required.
  • Proven ability to lead technical design teams and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Background in designing various facility types, including healthcare, research labs, and large venues.
  • Proficiency in CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, StarCCM+, FloEFD, and FDS.
  • In-depth understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
  • Familiarity with design tools like AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, and Navisworks.
  • Effective communication and analytical skills with a commitment to quality and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation using Python, C++, or Java.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies as described and characterized in this job description.
