Stormwater Engineer | Washington Water Business Group
HDR's Washington Water Business Group's thriving Water Resources Management team is recognized throughout Washington in the planning, design, and delivery of complex stormwater management, restoration, fish passage, and flood mitigation projects.
As a stormwater engineer, you will grow and flourish as a part of our dynamic team. You will collaborate with other team members and apply your planning, engineering, and task management skills to develop stormwater improvements that enhance water quality, reduce flooding, and restore habitat in our local communities. You will be supported by our senior stormwater engineers and/or project managers who will provide guidance and mentorship throughout the project lifecycle. You will also have the chance to mentor EITs as part of a cohesive team, learning from each other and drawing upon local and national expertise on exciting projects.
Having the ability to function effectively in a variety of roles on integrated project teams is key for this role. Team collaboration is a cornerstone of our design delivery approach. Candidates with strong self-motivation and ability to work independently will excel in this role.

You will apply your skills to support cities, counties, state and federal agencies to:
Conduct complex hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, present data in reports, lead production of design calculations and technical reports, and lead preparation of engineering plans and specification
Understand the impact of stormwater from developed areas on local streams and lake
Identify stormwater infrastructure that supports sustainable growth, simplifies operation and maintenance, and replaces aging facilitie
Implement strategies to retrofit developed areas to reduce stormwater impact
Mitigate planned development with innovative stormwater BMP
Apply green stormwater infrastructure practices into designs supporting Transportation, Water and Wastewater, Industrial and Commercial development
Manage stormwater as a resource, recharging aquifers, enhancing wetlands, and protecting streams and lake
Create stormwater parks that bring the community together
Specific responsibilities may also include:
Performing complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection, and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedure
Making decisions on significant design and engineering procedures, as needed
Acting as technical specialist or project manager on mid-size projects, as needed
Delegating to and mentoring junior staff, as needed
Supervising small staff of professionals and technicians, as needed
Performing other duties as needed

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent field
- Previous experience in water resources engineering projects
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
