POSITION SUMMARY
Lead and perform FACTS and HVDC system design, equipment design and rating, and system configuration, including factory test and commissioning test, development, technical consultation, and leadership for power electronics-based products (i.e., SVC Statcom, HVDC). Instruct sales, engineering and projects staff in proper power electronics design and equipment application.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lead and perform design studies and prepare written reports for FACTS and HVDC systems, such as main circuit design, reliability and availability analysis, harmonic filter design, loss calculation, control performance analysis, and audible noise to meet customer specifications and system performance requirements. Direct and review technical studies performed by other departments and outside services.
  • Lead and perform equipment design and rating calculations for FACTS and HVDC systems, including development of one-line diagram of FACTS and HVDC systems.
  • Design and implement FACTS and HVDC protection and control systems, including system control performance analysis.
  • Design and implement operation method of FACTS and HVDC systems to meet customer specifications.
  • Lead, plan and execute site commissioning tests for FACTS and HVDC systems. Prepare written reports for commissioning plan and commissioning results
  • Develop equipment specifications for power electronic converters, cooling systems, large power transformers, and another main circuit equipment.
  • Coordinate system design through implementation of equipment factory test and real-time digital simulator testing.
  • Guide field engineers and service personnel with start-up, troubleshooting and repair of FACTS and HVDC systems. Coordinate the response to issues in field by providing on time solutions to installation and testing issues.
  • Contribute to the advancement of FACTS & HVDC product development through collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric's global engineering teams
  • Implement and modify, as necessary, FACTS and HVDC design procedures.
  • Assist and support Sales Team with bids and technical proposal development.
  • Monitor factory and field test plans to ensure adequate techniques and uniform, cost effective practices. Review and interpret factory test results for power electronics equipment and systems.
  • Establish and maintain design standards
  • Propose and evaluate cost reduction initiatives for power electronics equipment and system designs.
  • Support and implement initiatives for new substation product/project offerings.
  • Propose and evaluate cost reduction initiatives for power electronics equipment and system designs.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Substation Division by conducting business with other MEPPI departments and outside contacts in a timely and cooperative manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Power Electronics Engineering with a minimum 7 years of experience in FACTS or HVDC system engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of power electronics, electrical transmission systems and substation equipment,
  • Advanced knowledge of substation theory, protection and control, including fundamental concepts of feedback control.
  • Advanced knowledge of harmonic and harmonic filtering equipment design methods.
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read, understand and create technical drawings and material.
  • Advanced computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office products and understanding of MATLAB, Simulink, and power systems simulation software.
