The Energy Projects team is a cross-functional organization responsible for the engineering and project execution of solar and storage projects. The team includes Engineering expertise from project development, design, power systems analysis, project managers, project estimators, construction managers, commissioning engineers. This team sits at the center of business development, Tesla technology, and the deployment of solar and storage projects. As a member of our team, you will help to shape the success of our projects in various applications across the Americas. You must have a genuine passion for enabling and executing projects that will fundamentally change the world's energy infrastructure and must want to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. The Development Engineer will be a key technical member of a pre-contract cross-functional team that focuses on evaluating, defining and implementing strategies to develop stationary storage, solar, and microgrid opportunities deploying Tesla's technology in a variety of applications and markets. You will be responsible for managing and defining the technical development of a diverse portfolio of projects for a wide range of customers. You will manage all engineering activities to enable the successful deployment of these projects. There is a strong emphasis on experience with design and construction of large scale/utility projects with the flexibility to handle smaller, complex, customized projects.
This is a diverse role where knowledge of basic design rules, constructability, permitting, utility requirements, and engineering fundamentals for utility scale and smaller complex projects is expected. This position will be full-time onsite and can be based out of either our Austin, TX or Palo Alto, CA office.

Responsibilities
  • Be responsible for project development ownership and execution, which requires understanding and managing the scope, schedule, and expectations of all stakeholders and keeping all parties in sync
  • Coordinate closely with Project Development Managers and Sales Engineers to provide technical support in creating comprehensive proposals for customers
  • Manage Engineering deliverables to support sales and business development efforts, including customized requests for single line drawings, communication wiring diagrams, and system layouts
  • Review of technical specifications to verify compliance from a technology and project/plant design perspective
  • Interface with internal customers (project managers, product engineers, sales team) and external customers (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure consistent communication
  • Identify gaps in scope and responsibility to ensure project success. This requires a comprehensive understanding of Engineering, Construction, interconnection and permitting concepts, costs and rules of conduct
  • Identify and communicate risks effectively to management for quick consumption and expedited decision-making
  • Other responsibilities may include assessing project sites, progressing the electrical interconnection study process, and pursuing local, state and federal permitting


Requirements
  • Degree in an Engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years' experience in design and construction of power/generation projects
  • 1+ year experience in utility/large scale PV or battery storage design and construction
  • Strong CAD skills
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Experience with fast-paced organizations
  • Experience in HV/MV Substations
  • Ability to prioritize and execute many projects and tasks in parallel
  • Ability to work cross functionally with engineering, business development, and construction personnel
  • 25% travel expected
