The Media and PR Specialist reports to the Public Relations Officer and supports the organization's media presence and public image. This role supports the development and execution of public relations and communications strategies to promote and protect the organization's reputation and increase visibility locally, regionally and nationally. This role involves developing and executing public relations, media and communications strategies to enhance the organization's reputation and visibility at local, regional and national levels. Key responsibilities include managing media relations, supporting executive positioning efforts, handling crisis communications and promoting organizational initiatives through strategic storytelling and media outreach.
The specialist, with guidance from the Public Relations Officer, will work closely with journalists, influencers and media professionals to secure positive coverage and position the organization's leadership as thought leaders in healthcare. The role also includes engaging patient families and community partners in messaging and communications.

In public relations, we proactively develop stories for traditional and non-traditional media at local, state, national, and international levels. All media inquiries regarding patients or any affiliation with Valley Children's must be coordinated through the Marketing & Communications Department, with media personnel escorted on-site. Internally, we keep staff, physicians, and volunteers informed through daily communications on various topics. Our communication tools and messaging are vital to achieving Valley Children's strategic objectives. We manage the content and design of the network's internet, publications, advertisements, and collateral materials, ensuring a consistent and professional image. By collaborating with all departments, we develop accurate, persuasive materials that drive engagement and support our mission.
Valley Children's Healthcare - one of the largest pediatric healthcare networks in the nation - provides Central California's only high-quality, comprehensive care exclusively for children, from before birth to young adulthood. With more than 670 physicians and 3,500 staff, Valley Children's delivers high-quality, comprehensive care to more than 1.3 million children in our service area. Our network offers highly specialized medical and surgical services to care for children with conditions ranging from common to the highly complex at our 358-bed stand-alone children's hospital that includes 28 regional NICU beds. Our family-centered, pediatric services extend from a leading pediatric cancer and blood disorders center home on the West Coast, and a pediatric heart center known for its expertise and pioneering treatments, to a Regional Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the highest level referral center between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum four (4) years related work experience in journalism, media relations or public relations
- Extensive experience in writing and content creation, with understanding of media pitching
- Solid interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with diverse personalities and groups, including patients and families
- Excellent verbal communication and public speaking abilities
- Flexible to quickly pivot and respond to changing priorities

- College degree - 4 year required
