About the Role

The US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is seeking a highly skilled Space-Based Data Assimilation Specialist to join the Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, California. This role is a vital part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focusing on the assimilation of space-based remotely sensed data to support advanced atmospheric modeling and forecasting systems.

The successful applicant will contribute to the analysis and integration of data from hyper-spectral infrared spectrometers, microwave radiometers, and radio occultation sensors from the GNSS-RO constellation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assimilate space-based remotely sensed data into advanced variational data assimilation systems.
  • Analyze data from hyper-spectral infrared spectrometers, microwave radiometers, and GNSS-RO radio occultation sensors.
  • Develop and apply fast radiative transfer models and techniques.
  • Handle and process large-volume data sets.
  • Perform statistical analyses to validate and interpret remotely sensed data.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:
  • ACTIVE SECRET CLEARANCE
  • Master's degree (or higher: Ph.D. or equivalent experience) in Atmospheric Science (Meteorology), Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Oceanography, Computer Science, Statistics, or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency in at least one or more of the following programming languages/tools: FORTRAN, C/C++, Python, UNIX shell scripting, Matlab, IDL, GrADS, RTTOV, CRTM, or ROPP.
  • Expertise in handling large datasets and performing complex data analyses.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of variational data assimilation systems.
  • Experience with radiative transfer and fast radiative transfer models.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis and modeling of atmospheric data.
