Applied Composites (AC) is seeking an Engineer 3, Manufacturing who will work within a multi-functional team to develop tooling methodologies and program industrialization plans, new manufacturing processes, work instructions, and solve manufacturing problems. The Engineer shall have a deep knowledge of fiber reinforced composite material processing, aerospace part manufacturing techniques, composite material performance characteristics, and the equipment used to manufacture and test composite parts.

Job Accountabilities:
  • Develop manufacturing methods and processes, tooling statements of work, and equipment specifications for current production and new development programs
  • Developing engineering Bill of Materials and estimating labor hours using historical data, time studies, or parametric equations
  • Obtain tooling quotations from internal and external sources
  • Write technical content of new business proposals, to include descriptions of manufacturing approaches, definition of full tooling stream, and explanation of related work content currently in production across all Applied Composite locations
  • Evaluate alternative composite materials and processes that improve component properties, reduce costs, and increase efficiency by performing trade studies and testing
  • Using lean manufacturing principles, identify opportunities to reduce cost, reduce variation, reduce cycle time, improve yields, improve reliability, and improve productivity
  • Provide ongoing engineering assistance to operations including troubleshooting of process operating problems, conducting special tests, developing reports, providing technical assistance as required, and reporting of production status


Job Specifications:

Education: Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations
Years' Experience: 5 (plus) years of aerospace manufacturing environment preferred, with minimum of 3-years related to the processing of composite structures
Skills:
  • Demonstrated competency in the processing of autoclave cured composite materials, including hand lay-up, vacuum bagging techniques, adhesive bonding, core splicing, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret customer specifications and 2D engineering drawings with an in-depth knowledge of GD&T; and the ability to interrogate 3D CAD models to extract all engineering requirements
  • Experience with engineering estimating and proposal development, to include deconstruction of all relevant engineering requirements, creating engineering bill of materials (BOMs), writing supplier RFQs, obtaining supplier quotations, developing preliminary manufacturing process flows, identifying tooling solutions, and estimating factory labor hours through all phases of the manufacturing process
  • Experience defining tooling requirements for lay-up molds and mandrels, trim & drill fixtures, assembly fixtures, and manufacturing aids used in fabrication of complex composite structures.
  • Strong MS Excel user
  • Experience working within an AS9100 quality management system
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with ability to create clear and succinct presentations and reports to communicate processes and project results with internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of standard aerospace industry specifications and practices
  • Experience with filament winding, compression molding, RTM (resin transfer molding), thermoplastic fabrication, CNC machining of composites and core forming and machining
  • Proficient in the manipulation of 3D part definition in Creo; and experienced in development & optimization of pre-preg flat patterns using FiberSim
  • Background in Lean and/or Six Sigma principles including Process Mapping, 5S, DMAIC, Cellular Manufacturing, FMEA, Pull Systems and Continuous Improvement Events such as Kaizen or Six Sigma Projects
