The Earth & Environmental Sciences (EES) Division is seeking candidates for the Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) of the National Security Earth Science Group. The Group Leader is part of the EES Division management team which oversees an organization with an annual budget of $115M, 250 personnel) made up of technical staff, postdocs, and students) that has a focus on operational, applied, and fundamental research related to energy, natural resource, climate, ecology, environmental, and national security Earth sciences. World class analytical & radiochemical laboratories & greenhouse, field observatories (field deployed laboratories and instrumentation), high performance computing platforms, machine learning/artificial intelligent code development and usage, and complex physics codes are capabilities in the EES Division. EES Division collaborates broadly with other LANL divisions, and other DOE laboratories in areas such as biology, chemistry, materials science, modeling, simulation and computing, space & planetary sciences, global security and weapons science. EES Division has strong industrial partnerships with oil & gas companies, AI/ML companies, NM small businesses in agriculture, energy, material science, farming. EES Division works closely with universities across the southwest and west coast.
National Security Earth Science (EES-17) has about 75 staff, postdocs, and students with an annual budget of about $30M. EES-17 performs fundamental and applied research in support of LANL missions in Global Security, Weapons Containment, and Energy Security. The research includes ground-based nuclear detonation detection using seismic and atmospheric infrasound signals; experiments to understand the physics of subsurface explosive sources; rock fracture and damage simulation using continuum and discrete approaches; studies of large-scale earth dynamics including rifting, mountain building and earthquakes; containment support for subcritical weapons experiments; support for US participation in international nuclear weapons treaties (CTBT); active and passive subsurface seismic imaging; and linear and nonlinear acoustic imaging of solid materials for characterization and damage assessment. Our sponsors include NNSA, DOE, Department of State, Department of Defense, other Government Agencies, and Industry.
Experimental capabilities and facilities within EES-17 include the Los Alamos Seismic Network which monitors earthquake activity on and around the LANL site and maintains a substantial number of field deployable seismic and infrasound instruments. This team deploys sensors around the US supporting small to large experimental campaigns. This group also manages an acoustics lab including laser vibrometers to perform non-destructive assessment experiments on rocks, earthlike materials (concrete), and other solids such as metals. Other facilities include acoustics calibration and ultrasound imaging laboratories. What You Will Do
You will lead the National Security Earth Science Group (EES-17) by nurturing an intellectual environment that is conducive to forward- looking scientific research, development, innovation, and mission delivery, and which attracts, retains, and develops the highest caliber of diverse scientific staff. You will work with the Division Office to ensure scientific and technical quality and impact, delivery on commitments, and integration of safety and security principles. As Group Leader, you will ensure that the National Security Earth Science Group has a comprehensive, integrated set of core-competencies to deliver on existing programs and commitments, and cultivates a culture of respect for diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging within the Group. The Group Leader actively manages and positions the Group to meet emerging challenges and develop new programs through effective collaboration with peers across the Laboratory and at other institutions. The Group Leader will work with Division Leadership to determine organizational objectives, implement, and disseminate lab policies, and delegate assignments. The Group Leader is supported by a Deputy Group Leader, Team Leaders, an administrative assistant and a financial analyst.

Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced knowledge of and networks with potential sponsoring organizations (such as DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, NSF, other government agencies, and industry, etc.).
- Experience operating in research facilities with electrical and/or chemical hazards
- A PhD in Geoscience or a related field.
