Position Summary
The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at the University of Georgia is accepting nominations and applications for the position of Department Head. The position reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and will be stationed at the Athens campus. Faculty rank will be at full professor level on a 9-month academic-year appointment with a guarantee of 2 months of summer salary.
Additional Requirements
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and/or Extension are required. Current or previous rank of professor with tenure.
To be considered for the rank of professor, candidates must have at least five full years in rank at the associate professor level. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire. The Department Head provides leadership, advocacy, and vision for the department's internationally recognized programs in teaching, research, Extension, and outreach at the Athens, Tifton, and Griffin campuses. The role requires a candidate with a strong academic record, a commitment to fostering innovation, and the ability to build a collaborative and inclusive culture that advances the department's mission. Major responsibilities include:
Support and enhance the department's research, Extension and outreach programs in Agricultural and Applied Economics. Promote innovation in research, teaching, and Extension to address current and emerging challenges in Agricultural and Applied Economics. Provide coaching and mentoring for faculty to develop their expertise and increase their success in obtaining competitive grants, publishing high-impact research, and delivering meaningful outreach. This position is also responsible for annual faculty performance evaluations.
Lead and oversee the department's teaching and academic programs. Majors within the department are: Agribusiness; Agricultural and Applied Economics; Environmental Economics and Management; and Hospitality and Food Industry Management (HFIM). The department also offers the following minors: Agribusiness and Management; Agricultural and Applied Economics; Environmental Economics and Management; Environmental Law; Food and Fiber Marketing; and Resource Economics. Encourage a culture that supports excellence in student mentoring and success. Assign faculty teaching responsibilities and oversee the development and evaluation of academic programs and curricula.
Administer and manage the allocation of departmental resources (financial, human, facilities, and capital) at the Athens campus and - in collaboration with the CAES Assistant Deans and the departmental Research, Extension, and Instruction Coordinators - at the Tifton and Griffin campuses. Play a proactive role in increasing extramural support for Research, Extension, and Instructional programs; assist and mentor faculty in obtaining gifts, grants, and contracts.
Actively participate in recruiting and mentoring students, staff, and faculty from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Foster an equitable and supportive workplace culture among faculty, staff, and students within and outside the department.
Participate in the development of policy and strategic planning in the college. Foster interdisciplinary collaborations within the College, across the university, and with external stakeholders. Facilitate partnerships with leaders of the agricultural industry, government agencies, and agricultural organizations to amplify the department's outreach efforts and create new opportunities for research and Extension.
As a faculty member, actively contribute to the research, Extension, and/or teaching mission in alignment with personal expertise and departmental priorities.
