The AVP of HR will lead the development of human resource programs, policies, and strategies that align with Knox College's mission, operational priorities, and long-term strategic vision. This role is a key strategic partner, ensuring that all HR functions-from benefits and compensation to performance management and employee relations-support institutional goals, enhance organizational culture, and foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. Reporting to the General Counsel/Vice President of Administration, the AVP of HR leads a dedicated team of HR professionals and collaborates across all levels of the institution to drive continuous improvement and innovation in HR practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategic HR plan to support the mission and goals of Knox College and operationalize various elements of the plan;
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on all human resources and organizational development matters;
  • Ensure the institution's policies and practices comply with federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Oversee the institution's compensation and benefits strategy to ensure competitiveness within the market and alignment with institutional goals;
  • Design training, performance management, and other talent management programs to attract and retain employees;
  • Build organizational capacity for change management;
  • Serve as a strategic partner to executive-level staff in the hiring and recruiting key positions at the institution;
  • Oversee employee relations, including grievances and management of the relationship with local labor union representing employees;
  • Champion and promote policies and initiatives that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, contributing to a welcoming and supportive work environment.
  • Lead and optimize HR department operations, including budget management, HR software systems, and professional development for staff.
  • Supervise and mentor HR staff, fostering a culture of service excellence.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Proven ability to design, implement and evaluate HR strategies that align with and advance organizational goals.
    • Strong knowledge of human resources best practices and emerging trends.
    • In-depth understanding of labor laws and compliance requirements, including Title IX, ADA, FMLA, and FLSA.
    • Elite verbal and communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas clearly
    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism.
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage staff and develop partnerships across the institution.
    • Demonstrated experience with data-informed decision-making
    • Experience with evaluating, improving, and recommending processes.


    Minimum Education Required:

    Bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational development, business administration, or a related field.

    Minimum Experience Required:

    Ten years of progressively responsible human resources experience with at least five years in a leadership role, ideally within a complex academic or nonprofit environment.

    Additional Qualifications: (Preferred qualifications)

    • SHRM-SCP or SPHR;
    • Experience in higher education;
    • Master's degree in human resources, Organizational Development, or a related field.
