Job Summary

The Inventory Management System (IMS) team is seeking a highly motivated and passionate Senior Process Design Engineer with expertise relevant to design, construction, and commissioning of industrial scale high-temperature process skids for molten salt systems.

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate detailed IMS system design, including vessels and piping, instrumentation/sensor interfaces, and system structures. The position requires a strong aptitude for engineering analysis, systems integration, industrial or pilot scale system deployment. You will be expected to regularly interface with multi-disciplinary teams including pipe stress analysis, ASME pressure vessel design, process design, reliability, IC&E engineering, and manufacturing. In this role, you will work closely to the IMS Lead Engineer and will be will be a critical member of the design team for Hermes, Kairos Power's first low-power demonstration reactor.

Responsibilities
  • Support IMS Responsible Engineer to design high temperature piping loops, vessels, heaters and instruments to manage the Hermes Flibe coolant inventory.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as hydraulic and thermal analysis to support defining design parameters such as pipe size, minimum pump head, pressures and flowrates of molten salt, heat input and insulation requirements, hydraulic losses in a pipe loop, etc.
  • Design and build testing platforms, including high temperature platforms, for the exploration of design features that require maturation.
  • Document calculations and design decisions in concise, clear technical memorandums to be used in internal recordkeeping and/or reactor licensing applications.
  • Review and redline P&IDs and PFDs to appropriately represent system design.
  • Develop and document system design, modes of operation, required controls and interlocks, and maintenance plans for full plant life cycle.
  • Interface with Mechanical Design, Structural, Instrumentation & Controls, Operations, and other Process Design Engineers to ensure designs meet plant needs.
  • Create or direct the creation of manufacturing drawings for KP-FHR custom Flibe inventory management equipment, and coordinate the fabrication with internal manufacturing operation and suppliers.

Qualifications
  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience in chemical, refining, power generation, aerospace, or nuclear design engineering.
  • Experience with designing systems for hazardous chemicals, molten salts, liquid metals, high-temperature petrochemical processes, etc. is desired.
  • Proficient in interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and process equipment datasheets.
  • Knowledge of HazOp process and demonstrated experience designing processes with a safety-first mindset to create robust systems.
  • Experience with seeing a design of a process through build, testing, pre-commissioning and operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity for autonomous problem-solving.
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others.
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively work with manufacturing/assembly teams to pivot or troubleshoot when hardware build issues are discovered while maintaining delivery schedule.

Travel
  • Some travel may be required (10-15%)

The salary range for this position is $133,900 to $157,500 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
