Job Summary:

The Controller/Director of Finance is a key member of the financial management team, responsible for overseeing all financial activities, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, and providing strategic financial guidance. This role demands a deep understanding of non-profit accounting, compliance, and financial management principles. With 10 years of experience, the ideal candidate will bring a wealth of knowledge, leadership skills, and a passion for the non-profit sector.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Lead and mentor outsourced accounts payable team member, and work collaboratively with gift processing and operations team members.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Provide training and support to staff on financial policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of financial goals and objectives with organizational priorities.


Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Financial Management
  • Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Manage the annual budgeting process, including preparation, analysis, and monitoring of budget performance.
  • Implement and maintain robust financial controls and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors.
  • Prepare and present financial statements and reports to senior management and the board of directors.
Strategic Planning
  • Provide strategic financial guidance and support to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plan.
  • Analyze financial trends and data to inform long-term financial planning and sustainability initiatives.
Compliance and Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including tax filings and grant reporting requirements.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to manage financial risk and ensure the security of organizational assets.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, investments, and reserves to ensure financial stability.

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent certification a plus but not required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial management experience, including at least 5 years in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience managing audits, budgets, and financial reporting for non-profit entities.
  • Proven track record of strategic financial planning and analysis.


Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, or kneeling
  • Prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
  • Ability to commute to offices and work-related meetings reliably and on time
  • Ability to travel as necessary for meetings, conferences and site visitis.
  • This role may involve additional hours during peak periods such as the fiscal year-end and audit season.
