The Olympia Public Works Department seeks a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Wastewater Project Engineer I. The selected individual will perform entry level engineering work under the direction of a professional engineer. The successful candidate will grow increasingly responsible for multiple complex and sensitive projects as a part of a workgroup providing integrated planning, engineering and program development services for the city's three water related utilities. Key responsibilities will include assisting with site development review, engineering analysis, policy implementation, field crew technical support, contract development, capital program development and project oversite and asset management tool development and implementation.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Understand municipal utility infrastructure management, including wastewater collection system design and asset management principles.
  • Ability to learn and innovate while applying engineering principles to real world problems facing the city's wastewater utility and our customers.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams in solving problems and making-decisions regarding complex utility engineering, policy, regulatory, operational and financial responsibilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication targeted at various audiences and the ability to explain technical concepts in a concise manner.
  • Appreciate working with various staff members in a collaboration-centered environment that succeeds by helping others succeed.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple and tasks simultaneously, often under tight deadlines.
  • Detailed-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
1. Responsible for the completion of engineering research.
2. Prepares maps, statistical information, plans, specifications and cost estimates pertaining to Public Works projects.
3. Performs design and drafting work on street and utility systems.
4. Analyzes current systems for deficiencies and makes recommendations for improvements in design and operation.
5. Operates computers as an aid to: drafting, data analysis, computation, word processing, report presentation, graph and chart generation.
6. May be asked to make presentations to City officials or community groups.
7. May contact property owners to collect data, solicit support or to inform residents in regards to assigned projects.
8. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

1. Knowledge of current principles, practices, methods and techniques of civil engineering, natural resource management, water resource engineering, environmental sciences or related disciplines.

2. Knowledge of current construction methods and the associated costs.

3. Skill in the use of ACAD Civil 3D to prepare plans and drawings.

4. Ability to work from written and/or oral instructions.

5. Ability to interpret engineering plans, survey notes and legal descriptions.

6. Ability to communicate technical information effectively, either verbally or in writing.

7. Ability to complete assigned work quickly and accurately to meet stringent timelines.

8. Ability to create and present technical information in data or graphic format.

9. Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous, tactful, but firm manner.

10. Ability to perform complex civil engineering computations, either manually or with the aid of a computer or calculator.

11. Ability to perform research and analysis on complex engineering, environmental or water resource issues, and advanced computer modeling.

12. Ability to clearly and accurately summarize and portray research information for technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience/Education:

1. Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering and one year of civil engineering experience required.

2. Additional experience in civil engineering may be substituted for the college degree with one-year experience being equal to one year of college education.

Special Requirements:

1. Some positions may require specific civil engineering background, such as water resource engineering, natural resource management, environmental sciences, sewer system analysis or water system analysis.

2. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of appointment.

$96,534.00 - $117,338.00
