Criminal Defense Associate (7+ Years Felony Experience Necessary)
The Nieves Law Firm is focused on fostering trusting relationships with its clientele. We are a dedicated and encouraging team that works to depose the stigma associated with criminal defense. Our aim is to give each defendant the opportunity to reconstruct their reputation while planning for the future. We are seeking a full-time Senior Attorney with over 6 years of criminal defense experience. The candidate's experience must be specifically in criminal defense -- experience in other law practices will not count toward the minimum requirements.
Applicants must possess felony experience in writing motions, attending preliminary hearings, and conducting felony trials. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a superior standard of work and exhibit passionate advocacy for each of their clients. We are looking for enthusiastic and successful people.
Compensation and benefits include base salary plus contributions to health/dental/vision plans, 401(k), mileage reimbursement, use of company car, bar dues, malpractice insurance, parking, student loan assistance, and other bonuses and benefits.
Responsibilities
Advocate in court for clients in order to secure the best possible outcome
Develop strategies to support clients at each stage of the legal process
Act as a mentor to Junior Associates and provide coaching and feedback
Represent the firm at case management meetings and provide insight into strategy
Ensure all legal documents are filed within the required deadlines
Thoroughly research legal issues and draft appropriate motions prior to court hearings
Maintain a respectful and professional relationship with clients
Arrive to work and court dressed appropriately and on time
Participate in regular goal-setting and performance reviews
Remain up-to-date on changes to the legal landscape through ongoing training
Qualifications
High energy level and enthusiasm for providing excellent client service
Experience with drafting and arguing motions, including post-conviction motions
A minimum of 10 felony jury trials and preliminary hearings
J.D. and be in good standing with the State Bar of California
Willingness to travel throughout Alameda County and the surrounding Bay Area
Knowledge of online case management systems
Dedication to zealously advocating for clients

- Admission to the California Bar and the capacity to attend court in the Bay Area is a MUST for this position.
