Duties & Responsibilities
Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:
The Executive Director of Residential Life & Housing (EDRLH) serves as the Chief Housing Officer for VCU and reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. The EDRLH works directly with, and supports, the VPSA and the AVP for Student Affairs to address, collaborate and provide leadership on all VCU and campus-wide matters directly and indirectly related to housing capital planning, occupancy/enrollment management, and public private partnerships related to on and off campus housing. Position serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and the primary liaison for all collaborative divisional and university efforts involving the on-campus student experience. The position plans and implements long range projects related to residential education. The position provides overall administration of residence life programs and overseeing academic initiatives for a growing on-campus program (currently at 5,960 students). The position provides leadership and overall supervision/development of 57 full time employees including: five Directors, fifteen Associate/Assistant Directors, fifteen Hall Directors, and twenty two administrative staff. The position directs and manages strategic initiatives and daily operations within the unit related to facilities, residential life, administration, budget and financial processes, conferences, safety/security, mail services, desk operations, community development, educational initiatives, crisis response, leadership development, retention efforts, and creative problem solving. Position serves as the primary liaison with various campus partners, including academic colleges, campus safety, new student programs, global education, facilities, student enrollment, and student success as it relates to the campus student experience.
Qualifications
Minimum Hiring Standards:
-Master's degree, preferably in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field or relevant professional experience.
-A minimum of ten years' progressive experience in residence life and housing services and supervision of professional staff.
-A strong skill in building a cohesive team and collaborative work is required.
-Experience in crisis management, student development, student belonging, facility management, budget management, and leadership development required.
-Ability to multitask, provide quality customer service, and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
-Demonstrated proficiency utilizing technology such as online systems, web applications, and/or standard office packages (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail).
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment; and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
-Terminal degree in higher education administration or related areas.
-Experience working with residential programs at institutions of higher education, development of living-learning initiatives, successful collaborations with campus partners related to on-campus programs, safety & security, coordination of programming initiatives, policy development, and proven success in retention efforts within a residential setting.
-Knowledge and incorporation of student development practices, assessment and budget management highly desired.
-Experience providing leadership, communication, strategic planning, and outstanding customer service to students, families, faculty, and staff through residence life and housing functions from a central office perspective.
-Ability to create and analyze various reports related to student success and student satisfaction instruments.
-Knowledge and experience working with off-campus housing operations and public private partnerships.
