SUMMARY:

The Senior System Administrator role is to ensure the stability and integrity of AMS servers (both Windows and Linux). This is achieved by proper planning, designing and supporting of systems at both the primary site and remote locations. The position will install, administer, troubleshoot and optimizes servers, systems software, and related components to achieve high performance for various business applications. This position will also assist in the administration of our Microsoft Exchange environment, VMware Infrastructure and system backups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Manage Linux and Windows server deployments
  • Assist with management of our VMware infrastructure including: installation, upgrades, troubleshooting, patching, backup and recovery, development and documentation of procedures
  • Assist with management of our Microsoft Exchange environment including: installation, upgrades, troubleshooting, patching, backup and recovery, development and documentation of procedures
  • Support and maintain Windows Domain Servers
  • Monitor, analyze, and predict trends for storage equipment performance, space allocation, and data growth to recommend enhancements
  • Coordinate and perform routine operating system and application maintenance to ensure a stable, reliable and secure environment
  • Document and participate in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning and testing with regards to computing systems including assisting with the management of our backup environment
  • Consult with users, management and vendors to determine computing needs and system requirements
  • Plan, execute and implement new system hardware and software and create and maintain technical documentation
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, or other system problems, and replace defective components when necessary
  • Take ownership over projects and responsibilities and resolve issues proactively
  • Manage multiple projects, activities and tasks simultaneously
  • Evaluate project plans and proposals to assess feasibility issues
  • Respond to customer requests via a help desk system
  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience
  • Research new technology products and make recommendations to management
  • Other duties as assigned

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • This position will primarily provide support for employees in Providence, Pawtucket and Washington D.C. but on occasion may be required to provide support to Ann Arbor employees. Positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate well with management, peers and staff are important in this position.
  • This position will also help manage outside vendor relations including: vendor selection, scheduling of product demo and soliciting of quotes for products and services as necessary.

  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) and at least ten years related experience is desirable.
  • Expert knowledge and experience in several of the following areas is desirable:
    • Knowledge of security standards and protocols; working knowledge of a range of diagnostic utilities
    • Design, implementation, monitoring and management of Windows servers and Linux servers (Ubuntu Operating System)
    • Strong Active Directory, Microsoft SQL and IIS design and administration experience
    • Strong knowledge of SSH, Samba, MySQL, Apache and Tomcat
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Exchange design and administration
    • Multisite VMware, vSphere & vCenter management and administration experience
    • Storage provisioning, management, and backup knowledge; ability to assess storage needs and provide solutions
    • Strong scripting skills for custom tools and reports (PowerShell, Perl, etc.)
    • Ability to prioritize based on immediate needs
    • Proven project management skills
    • Strong analytical skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent project management skills and attention to detail
    • Conscience in use of resources (people, time, materials) in cost-effective manner to achieve work objectives
