About The Opportunity

Working as an integral part of the Ta na wa Yus ta Stityntsam Rights and Title Department, reporting directly to the Natural Resources Manager, the Senior Natural Resources Specialist is responsible for fisheries related projects within the Rights and Title Department. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist will have, or gain, an understanding of Swxw7mesh traditional teachings along with a strong passion for protecting and preserving natural resources within the territory, upholding the rights of Squamish People's access to these resources, and assist in the coordination of harvesting resources when required. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist will assist with a variety of initiatives and project that include planning, coordination, and liaising with other governments, agencies, and NGO. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist may be required to participate in environmental emergency response if required. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist performs a wide variety of tasks and supports day-to-day operation of the Natural Resources Branch. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist will report to the Natural Resources Manager and assist in office-based program development, equipment and vehicle maintenance, and some field work when required. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist will assist in supervising seasonal staff who work in the field during summer. Maintaining good communication between internal Squamish Nation staff, Squamish People, external governments and agencies and is essential for this role. The Senior Natural Resources Specialist will also help coordinate events, meetings, and focus groups with Squamish People. When in the field, the incumbent must be able to walk on uneven forest terrain and wade in streams in all weather conditions. Some collection of biological field data will be required.

  • Knowledge of local marine, aquatic, and terrestrial species and preferably strong fish identification skills, monitoring and surveying techniques.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous governance and resource management laws and regulations.
  • Proactive in anticipating the needs of others and identifying solutions.
  • Resourceful, well-organized, detail-oriented with excellent time management abilities and strong ability to oversee multiple tasks.
  • Able to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Can lift up to 50 lbs and is physically able to perform on site duties required for the role.

Salary: $ 76,499 - $ 85,634 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits program
