The New Mexico Spaceport Authority was created by the Spaceport Development act (NMSA 58-31-1) for the purpose of:
(1) Encourage and foster development of the state and its cities and counties by developing spaceport facilities in New Mexico;
(2) Actively promote and assist public and private sector infrastructure development to attract new industries and businesses, thereby creating new job opportunities in the State:
(3) Create the statutory framework that will enable the state to design, finance, construct, equip and operate spaceport facilities necessary to ensure the timely, planned and efficient development of a
southwest regional spaceport.
(4) Promote education involvement in spaceport activities and education and training of the workforce to develop the skills needed for spaceport operations.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to plan, implement, direct and maintain the agency's facilities, and utilities systems; including development of the preparation of capital and operational budget recommendations.
The position is responsible for the ongoing supervision and evaluation of the maintenance and operational environments (including agency and customer needs) of existing and planned facilities, utilities, launching, and ground vehicle fueling systems and aircraft vehicle systems. The incumbent will identify weaknesses and recommend solutions, improvements and upgrades to respective facilities systems and equipment.
The position oversees facilities maintenance staff and designated maintenance/construction contractor activities and coordinates with varying NMSA departments, CID, NM Fire Marshalls office for various activities.
How does it get done?
Manage the total facilities operations of Spaceport America by directing a skilled maintenance team and outside resources to ensure critical operational processes are maintained and the related safety protocols protecting employees, customers and the public are held to the highest standards.
1. The Spaceport Facilities Operations Manager plans, organizes, assists and directs the work of a skilled labor and maintenance crews performing a variety of maintenance activities on Spaceport property including the operation, custodial care, maintenance, alteration and repair of airport buildings, airfields, launch facilities, equipment and complex one-of-a-kind systems.
2. Proper maintenance of the facilities is critical to employee, customer and public safety.
3. Uses equipment for maintenance such as, but not limited to, electrical testers, airfield testing devices, ordinary and specialized hand and power tools, heavy equipment (including manlifts tractors, fuel trucks, light towers, fuel storage systems, and others.)
4. Has general understanding of various trades involved in airport/spaceport facilities/construction maintenance and maintenance related requirements.
Who are the customers?
This position interacts directly with a wide cross-section of users, customers and contractors at Spaceport America. The incumbent relates with other agencies, local governments, community stakeholders, the public and NMSA staff and Management Team.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise and adeptness of various items including:
- Strong written and oral communications skills, leadership skills, effective time management, ability to prioritize, works well independently and within a collaborative team environment.
- The trade skills will include understanding of aviation fuel storage and delivery systems, understanding of general building/construction standards and codes, experience is directing various types of skills trade contractors and/or teams, ability to demonstrate effective work in a changing work environment.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Business or Engineering and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance of a large scale operation including buildings, grounds, custodial duties, plumbing, electrical and/or appliance repair utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and familiarity with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Must maintain a drivers license. Must obtain and maintain a defensive driving certificate from the state of NM as a condition of continued employment.
Duties of this job can involve exposure to data and technology that is export-controlled by either the Department of State U.S. Munitions List (USML), through the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), or by the Department of Commerce, Commerce Control List (CCL), through the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Employees in this position are subject to the requirements of ITAR (22 CFR 120-130) and EAR (15 CFR 730-774). Please review ITAR and EAR requirements to ensure you are eligible for employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting and desert outdoor setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and in outdoor elements work. Sitting, standing, bending and reaching will be required. Ability to lift at least 50 lbs could be required. Some travel may be required. Occasionally work extra hours, on weekends and holidays. Work day can be dictated by customer schedule as it may be necessary to work non traditional work hours and non-traditional work days. On occasion it maybe necessary to traverse ladders, radio towers, rooftops, enclosed spaces, and job construction sites in the performance of work duties. Work duties will take employee to outside environments thus needing to manage weather challenges as appropriate.
