JOB OVERVIEW
As a senior member of the driven and passionate Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Senior Manager, Mission Communications, is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and plans that elevate our mission programs, drive revenue, and protect and enhance CCS's reputation with donors and the public. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the Senior Manager is an experienced leader who excels at providing strategic counsel to business partners and driving forward multi-channel communications plans that deliver results. The Senior Manager has robust media relations experience, is highly collaborative, and is enthusiastic about leading and supporting teams.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
- Working closely with the Director of Strategic Communications and the rest of the team, lead the development, execution and evaluation of strategic communications initiatives to support CCS's Advocacy, Research, and Information and Support Services teams.
- Develop tools, materials and collateral to support CCS communications with key audiences and set the standard for high quality and on-brand communications. These include op-eds, speeches, news releases, media pitches, briefing notes, presentations and more.
- Serve as a trusted advisor and collaborator for business partners including senior leaders, bringing communications expertise/input to their strategies and approach.
- Support provincial and federal advocacy activities through effective communications strategies.
- Guide the development of research communications strategies and materials that profile research impact, enhance research storytelling and help drive revenue.
- Lead the creation of communications plans and tactics that highlight CCS's information and support services, raising public awareness of the availability, quality and impact of these programs.
- Oversee team providing core media relations support, including media training, media monitoring, KPI tracking and the facilitation of media requests.
- Provide evaluation and recommendations to improve communications to meet quality standards, ensure progress towards targets and support the organization's positioning, reputation and brand.
- Manage and coach direct reports and indirect reports with a focus on growth, development and engagement.
- Foster a strong, collaborative, respectful working environment that highlights the talents and strengths of each team member.
- Ensure hiring practices are inclusive.
- Encourage growth and development opportunities for all team members.
- Champion CCS as a hero in the face of cancer.
- Contribute to our culture of belonging, equity, diversity and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, political or social science, public health, journalism or related field
- More than 5 years of extensive job-related experience in progressively more senior positions
- Demonstrated experience in communications strategy and media relations
- Knowledge of federal, regional and provincial government processes, advocacy and lobbying is essential
- Strong experience leading teams and working in a team-based environment
- Exceptional oral and written skills
- Superb organizational skills, project management and multi-tasking ability
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain good relationships
- Proven negotiation skills
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative where required, while working under pressure with often changing deadlines
- Strong customer service orientation and professionalism with proven ability to interact with diplomacy with colleagues, general public, media, government and health care stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint
- Exceptional oral and written skills, including presentation skills
- Superb organizational skills, project management and multi-tasking ability
- French proficiency is an asset
