Position Description:
Somerset West Community Health Centre is a well-established, non-profit, multi-service Centre providing health, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion.
Reporting to the Lung Health Manager, the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team providing excellent care to clients with complex respiratory needs living in or returning to the community through the Complex Respiratory Care Program (CRC). The RRT provides outreach (home visits) across the Champlain Region and must have a strong background in home mechanical ventilation and airway management. In addition, the RRT will provide ongoing outreach services to the client performing comprehensive respiratory assessment and ongoing education to clients, caregivers and staff involved in the circle of care. The RRT integrates knowledge of the social determinants of health into their daily practice.
The RRT will provide visible, proactive leadership and promote the delivery of client centered care through the application of professional standards and current respiratory guidelines. In consultation with the Lung Health Manager, the individual is responsible for assessing the learning needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating education activities/programs for the CRC program. Caregiver training and direct client care is provided through on- site education in a variety of settings including the clients home, in hospital assisting with discharge back to the community or through home and community care agency locations. The RRT is required to establish strong communication pathways between clients, physicians, specialists, hospitals, and other community partners. The RRT has an enhanced scope of practice familiar with utilizing RT led protocols and medical directives to develop and enhance the treatment plan for the client.
Requirements
Education/Professional Experience:
Successful completion of a Diploma from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program
Current and Active general certificate of registration with CRTO
Valid personal liability insurance
Current CPR Level C
Certified Respiratory Educator (preferred)
Key Competencies:
4 years' experience related to clinical field.
2 years of critical care experience
Knowledge of acts or legislation that govern practice: Registered Health Professionals Act (RHPA), Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Infection, Prevention and Control Measures (IPAC)
Knowledge of primary health care and the social determinants of health
Experience working with Home Mechanical Ventilation in adult populations
Knowledge of Home Mechanical Ventilation Guidelines
Experience with airway clearance techniques
Strong airway management skills
Highly collaborative and works well with other health-care professionals
Ability to liaise with external partners and to advocate for clients
Ability to facilitate individual and group training sessions
Personal Suitability/Other Requirements:
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Successful criminal reference check
Must be comfortable working in a busy environment with multiple demands
Proficient use of computers, various software applications and electronic medical record systems
Flexibility to travel, including overnight stays on occasion as required
Valid Driver's License and use of personal vehicle mandatory (reimbursement for mileage)
Language Capability:
Bilingual, English and French, preferred
Other additional languages an asset
