What are Trust Fund Positions?

Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. As part of its strategic focus to build and enrich a national culture of learning by engaging with educational systems nationwide, The Office of the Under Secretary for Education at the Smithsonian is actively planning and implementing multiple initiatives to expand outreach and engagement across the country, with special emphasis on connecting with rural America and communities where there is little or no existing relationship with the Smithsonian.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Office of the Under Secretary of Education (OUSE) seeks an experienced Advancement Communication Specialist to serve as the primary advancement writer to develop proposals, grant applications, donor stewardship publications, e-communications, solicitation letters, presentations, acknowledgment letters, and reports. The Specialist supports the Associate Director with preparing briefing materials for donor meetings, post-meeting follow-up, and record management. The incumbent manages, prepares, and tracks approval of gift agreements, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and other gift-related documentation.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Successful applicants will demonstrate experience developing compelling stories, case statements, and/or written materials in support of fundraising. Experience developing compelling stories, case statements, and/or written materials in support of fundraising required. The ability to easily change writing styles to fit the author, audience, and voice of the piece as well as the ability to translate complex ideas into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists is necessary for this role. Strong organizational, relationship, collaboration, and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently are essential. Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Communications, English, Writing, or Design. Experience in education or a large cultural organization is preferred.

Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
