General Description of Duties

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the purpose of the position is to render independent, advanced and specialized health care to inmate patients in the Correctional Facility. Ensures functions under charge are performed in compliance with all federal, state, and local rules, policies and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs physical examinations and preventive health measures within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practitioner license and under the direction of a physician.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic test to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs. Establishes preliminary diagnosis and prescribes treatment in accordance with established protocols; conducts physical examinations in response to inmate complaints.
  • Records physical findings and formulates plan and prognosis based on patient's condition.
  • Discusses care with physician and other health professionals to prepare a comprehensive patient care plan; participates with the other members of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in assessment and developing individualized treatment plan specific for the inmate.
  • Submits the health care plans and goals of individual patients for periodic review and evaluation by the Medical Director.
  • Refers patients to physician for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.
  • Actively involved in the Quality Assurance/Risk Management/Infection Control/Utilization Management Program.
  • Leads and provides clinical expertise to professional and support personnel and collaborates with other healthcare disciplines to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Monitors medication therapies and prescribes medication changes as necessary in accordance with established protocols; conducts assessments to detect the presence of medical disorders and other side effects of medication therapy; prescribes treatment as indicated in accordance with established protocols.
  • Conducts daily management of all infirmary patients.
  • Establishes relationships with professional of other health related groups within the community; maintains open communication with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university.

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain State of Florida license as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  • Current hands-on CPR certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). Must have current hands-on CPR.
Miscellaneous:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand, follow and lead written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to effectively supervise a staff of entry, journey and senior level professionals engaged in carrying out division medical functions.
  • Knowledge of business English and spelling; knowledge of basic math.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of current health care standards; thorough knowledge of all applicable medical treatments and common medications administered within a corrections facility.
  • Thorough knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.
  • Skill in the physical examinations, diagnoses, treatment and preventive health measures within the scope of license and under the direction of a physician.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies throughout the Facility.
  • Skill in acute injuries, to include suturing and staples.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, health and corrections professionals.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and cordially with a variety of people from different cultural backgrounds; ability to deal with people in a variety of changing and complex situations.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, or climb stairs for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to rotate taking call after hours, to include weekends.

  • Physical Demand: Medium
  • 50 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for protection and safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of light work.
