The Marion County Sheriff's Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Community Corrections team as a Deputy Sheriff. Often referred to as Parole and Probation, the Community Corrections Division serves a diverse clientele through the delivery of a wide array of services while embracing Evidence Based Practices and Community Policing as our guiding philosophies. Deputy Sheriffs with Community Corrections provide supervision to clients as they work collaboratively to assist them with their successful reentry into the community. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be service-oriented, and be willing to work in a team environment. We are a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

WAGES
$30.08 - $40.28 Trainee Pay Rate*
$33.13 - $47.32 Certified Pay Rate*
*Hourly rate negotiable.

In addition to the base pay rates above, Community Corrections Deputies may be eligible for a variety of pay incentives including:
  • Education
    • 2% for 10 years of service with Associate degree or equivalent
    • 4% for 15 years of service with Bachelor's degree plus advanced DPSST parole and probation certification
  • Bilingual 5%
  • Field Training Officer 5%
  • Instructor 5%
  • SWAT Team 5%
  • Tactical Negotiations Team 5%
  • Longevity
    • Longevity 1 = Step 8* plus 5% after 10 years of service and at least 1 year on pay scale step 8.
    • Longevity 2 = Step 8* plus 10.25% after 15 years of service and at least 1 year on Longevity 1.
    • Longevity 3 = Step 8* plus 12.75% after 20 years of service and at least 1 year on Longevity 2.
* Step 8 is dependent on certification level: basic is $44.41, intermediate is $45.49, and advanced is $47.32.

Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Prepares written reports and maintains Corrections Information System (CIS) records necessary to the effective operation of the program.
  • Conducts personal interviews with clients to ascertain risk/need/responsivity issues; develops case plans with clients; maintains chronological case histories; confers with spouses, families, employers, and other service agencies relative to client needs; conducts interviews and investigations of clients on probation, parole, or post-prison supervision.
  • Presents facts and evaluation of cases to court; carries out disposition ordered by court.
  • Confers with supervisor, other staff, other social welfare agencies, schools, churches, public health agencies, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and others relative to individual cases in outlining treatment and care programs.
  • Confers with supervisor and/or senior Community Corrections Deputy prior to making sanctioning decisions.
  • Maintains responsibility for specimen collection and monitoring of offenders' drug and alcohol testing.
  • May have contact with aggressive clients or volatile situations. Will be required to respond to emergency situations and interact to diffuse aggressive behavior utilizing corrections techniques and established disciplinary controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements for the Position

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION
Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:
  • United States Citizen within one year of employment
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (Marion County Sheriff's Office will consider applicants who are age 20, if they meet the qualifications of the position and are age 21 within 90 days from the recruitment close date.)
  • Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation.
  • Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
  • Information regarding the minimum qualifications and physical requirements for Oregon law enforcement officers is available in section of the Oregon Administrative Rules.
Must meet the following Marion County requirements:
  • Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business.   • Finalists for this position are subject to an extensive background investigation.
  • Finalist will be required to pass a psychological and physical exam.
  • Ability to hold, aim, and discharge firearm with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications.
  • Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) within 18 months of employment.

  • This position normally works Monday - Friday, Day Shift, with flexibility for evening or weekend work, according to departmental needs.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAINEE LEVEL
  • Graduation from a four (4) year college or university; OR any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County; AND
  • Must obtain Basic Parole and Probation certification from the State Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training (DPSST) within 18 months of hire.
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFIED LEVEL
  • Meets trainee level requirements; AND one year of experience in professional case work; OR any satisfactory equivalent combination of adult or juvenile parole and probation experience, education and training as determined by Marion County; AND
  • Possess a Basic Parole and Probation certification from the State Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training (DPSST). If in possession of an out-of-state Community Corrections certification, must attend and pass the DPSST Basic Parole and Probation Academy within one year of hire.

    PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
    Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
