Job Summary

The Director is responsible for strategic oversight and operational performance of designated departments. This position holds direct responsibility for assuring departmental goals relative to throughput, efficiency and financial viability are met. This position is responsible for identification of evidence based best practice in care delivery, achievement of national benchmarks for outcome and continuous performance improvement in the delivery of behavioral health services.

Essential Functions

  • Achieves outcomes consistent with the organization mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of Carolinas HealthCare System and the Behavioral Health Service Line.
  • Works in conjunction with senior leadership, medical director, colleagues and physicians to set and achieve appropriate goals and strategies of the Behavioral Health Service Line.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the development of designated departments.
  • Selects and Develops assigned team members; reviews and evaluates performance provides specific feedback and leadership guidance to improve effectiveness and growth as a leader and a professional; sets goals and develops innovative educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrates skill and knowledge of the clinical role and business functions of designated departments.
  • Assures appropriate communication occurs between the medical staff, leadership team, service line leadership and facility team members.
  • Conducts needs assessment, data gathering, analysis and report of results to support recommendations for program additions, expansions or changes.
  • Oversees compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and 3rd party payor regulations and standards.
  • Ensures the development and use of evidence-based, outcomes driven approaches to treatment and care delivery; maintains knowledge base of current trends in area of expertise.
  • Uses a system based approach, participates in the coordination of services for the patients services; easing all transitions for patients through the continuum and ensuring safe hand offs.
  • Leads and supports patient experience initiatives that drive top decile performance in patient satisfaction; shows evidence of efforts to drive continuous improvement.
  • Develops effective working relationships with medical staff in their area of responsibility; facilitates teamwork between medical staff and teammates; engages medical staff in program planning.
  • Responsible for creating a work environment that drives employee engagement; providing accountability as appropriate to drive performance and teamwork.
  • Works cooperatively with other disciplines and departments across the facility, service line and system.

  • Serves as a role model in all aspects of job performance and human relations skills.
  • Mentors and engages team members in CHS activities and services to strengthen commitment to the organization and the patients we serve.
  • Leads the fiscal oversight of allocated resources to optimize efficient and effective utilization of resources.
  • Assesses and projects resources required to provide services and assists in the development of an annual operating and capital budget.
  • Monitors monthly performance reports for financial performance; identifying and analyzing variances; providing action plans to improve performance.
  • Reviews data and systems which capture charges in order to maximize reimbursement for services rendered; monitor for accuracy and appropriateness of charges.
  • Represents Behavioral Health in the community and develops/maintains effective working relationships with community partners.
Marginal Functions
Ensures excellent communication and relationships are maintained within Behavioral Health Service Line and across the Carolinas HealthCare System enterprise. Ensures all service excellence and best practice opportunities are implemented.

Physical Requirements
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting and reaching. Must be able to write and speak English in a clear and grammatically correct manner. Intact sense of sight and hearing. Finger dexterity to operate computer and calculator. Critical thinking and ability to concentrate and make decisions. Must be able to respond quickly in stressful situations.

Education, Training, and Experience
Master's degree in a relevant human services field such as Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy from an accredited school of graduate education or Master's degree in Health Administration required.

Five (5) years clinical experience required. One (1) year supervisory experience required.
