Description:

Alberta Health Services is currently recruiting independently licensed Physicians for the Surgical Hospitalist Service at the Sturgeon Hospital. The physician would be the most responsible physician with close consultation and collaboration with the Surgeons (General Surgery, Orthopedics and Plastics, and will work closely with the surgical consultants and surgical unit staff) at the Sturgeon Hospital.

The program is interested in hiring Physicians with an Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Family Medicine background, with a key focus on meeting the medical needs of surgical inpatients. The Surgical Hospitalist will be the most responsible physician and all surgical patients (both elective and acute care) will be admitted to the hospitalist service. The Surgeons will act as first point of contact by Emergency or RAAPID North and will provide consultation on all patients. The Surgical Hospitalist will admit the patient and act as most responsible physician. In some cases, the Surgeon will follow the patient closely and provide detailed management suggestions and, in other cases, the surgeon will provide suggestions at the time of admission and give advice as to when the surgeon should be brought back into the patient's care. The aim of the program is to offload the medical and non acute care load from the Surgical Consultants while providing close care and support to the Hospitalist for acutely ill patients. The goal of this program is to have a cohesive surgical care team which works as a collaborative group.

The Surgical Hospitalist will be on service for one week at a time. The expectation is that the hospitalist will be available for admissions/consultations in the ER/ward from 0800 to 1700hrs and will field ward calls/attend to sick ward patients from 1700 to 0700hrs. The surgeons will see consults/manage admissions from 1700-0700.

The Surgical Hospitalist will be responsible for rounding daily on admitted inpatients as well as attending consults in Emergency and on the wards until 1700hrs. The Surgeon (General Surgery, Orthopedics and Plastics) on call will field all phone calls from ER, RAAPID and ward consults and, if the consult is accepted, the hospitalist will admit with consultation by the Surgeon.

Primary clinical activities are focused on the medical needs of surgical patients with advice and suggestions regarding surgical management provided by the Surgeons. Daily responsibilities will include, but not limited to, completing admissions, medication reconciliation, and allergy profiles. As well as providing daily assessments, ordering tests, diagnostics, investigations, procedures, and consultations in collaboration with the Surgeons. Timely follow up on diagnostic tests during the day will be critical in ensuring efficient flow of patients through the program and allow for timely booking of further investigations/procedures.

As the most responsible physician, the Surgical Hospitalist will develop treatment plans (in collaboration with the Surgeons) and actively manage the medical needs of all admitted surgery inpatients. Liaising with the interdisciplinary team, patients, and families will occur on a daily basis. The Surgical Hospitalist will also participate in discharge planning and dictating discharge summaries and consultation notes as necessary.

The Surgical Hospitalist role will primarily focus on treating the medical concerns of Surgery inpatients. Secondary duties may include assisting in the operating room for basic orthopedic procedures and occasionally assisting in Outpatient Clinics (however, this should not interfere with consultation and ward duties).

Physicians must be independently licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, have appropriate Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage, and ACLS certification. Applicants must have current experience in the clinical management of acute care inpatients, and/or experience in emergency room services.
