Shift: Tuesday - Friday, 10 hours per day, plus on-call

License: Required completion of a technologist training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, or an agency recognized by the Department of Education
Certifications: Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) preferred; if not certified, must obtain certification within six months of hire. Current BLS certification required.

Job Description:
- Scrub in on surgical procedures, under professional nurse supervision, for various surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Obstetric/Gynecology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic, and Endoscopic procedures.
- Provide patient care and support for individuals of all ages and their families, ensuring quality care in routine or emergent situations.
- Utilize the AORN Standards of Care in daily practice.
- Supply surgeons with instruments, sutures, sponges, and equipment and confirm the accuracy of sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
- Maintain aseptic techniques and correct any breaks in the technique to provide optimal patient care.
- Anticipate the surgeon's material or instrument preferences and respond accordingly.
- Communicate updates to the nurse based on ongoing assessment of equipment needs and physician preferences.
- Set up a sterile table with necessary instruments, equipment, supplies, and medications/solutions.
- Ensure equipment is in good working order and maintain the highest standards of sterile technique during procedures.
- Assist in preparing the room for the next patient by correctly labeling and processing all operative fluids and aiding in the sterile field's draping.
- Operate and monitor specialized OR equipment and demonstrate autoclave use.
- Report equipment in need of repairs and maintain stock levels by inventorying and ordering supplies as needed.
- Take apart and reassemble instruments or equipment for cleaning and prepare them for sterilization.
- Participate in staff teaching and development, including developing and implementing educational programs and assisting in orienting new staff and students.
- Manage care through others by directing them to follow policies and procedures and suggesting changes as needed.
- Communicate effectively with staff, patients, and health team members and give feedback to promote patient and organizational objectives.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning administrative and patient issues and participate in hospital committees as assigned.
- Contribute to the area or department through active participation in staff meetings, goal setting, and efforts to increase cost-effectiveness. Document participation in relevant committees and projects.
