Job Description
What You Will Be Doing

The Park Superintendent is responsible for and supervises park operations within the 500,000-acre Chugach region, including Eklutna Lake, Eagle River, the Anchorage Hillside, and the Turnagain Arm. This position provides the administrative oversight of a diverse park unit with a number of varied and complex management factors. It is also responsible for managing the operating, personnel services, and minor capital improvement budgets assigned to its region. This position requires substantial responsibility for exercising independent judgement in employing, disciplining, or adjudicating subordinates' grievances.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

The Chugach Region Park Superintendent is based out of the Potter Section House on the edge of south Anchorage. Daily contacts include interacting with park staff, visitors, supervisors, and advisory board members.
Who We Are Looking For

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies:
  • Working knowledge of the state statutes, regulations, and policies that apply to the Division's programs and operations.
  • Skill in organizing, evaluating, and presenting information, orally and in writing, to a variety of individuals sometimes under adverse or stressful conditions.
  • Skill in analyzing issues, developing potential resolutions or alternative courses of action and identifying their costs and benefits, determining the legality and feasibility of proposed options, identifying a best course of action, identifying the necessary resources, and building the necessary support for that change and effectively communicating the problem and its resolution to those tasked with implementation of the change.
  • Ability to motivate, direct, review, and evaluate the work of others.
  • Experience managing one or more geographic areas primarily for public outdoor recreation, including supervising technical and professional staff, staying within an operational budget allocation, and ensuring that excellent public service is provided safely and efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of advanced professional or supervisory level experience in natural resource management. The required experience includes work such as a Park Ranger 2, Natural Resource Specialist 3, Natural Resource Manager 1, Geologist 3, Hydrologist 2, Agronomist 2, Forester 3, or Biologist 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
AND
A valid Alaska driver license is required at the time of appointment.

Travel to remote locations by small plane or boat may be required. Positions may have access to arms and ammunition; in those cases applicants will be subject to restrictions for prior criminal convictions.
