I. PURPOSE OF JOB:
To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the Cardiothoracic surgeon, or attending physician diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective use of his knowledge in the sphere of decision-making required to establish diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. A major role will be as a patient's advocate in the medical care system serving as confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patient, hospital course follow through and discharge. Participates in postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications. Performs therapeutic procedures and assignments as directed by the physician and as indicated by his/her training and experience. Assists the surgeon with surgical procedures when indicated. Effectively manage the patient throughput of the CVICU as well as the use of the surgical team as indicated.
Job Qualifications:
IV. QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science from an accredited institution required. Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant program. Must complete courses of training for both basic and advanced cardiac life support.
Experience: Two years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate will be considered.
Other Skills: Must be certified or eligible by the NCCPA and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure.

- Knowledge of pre-existing conditions that may affect surgical procedure.
- Working knowledge of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures and anatomy.
- Basic understanding of major surgical complications and their treatment.
- Knowledge of cardiac patient postoperative management.
