Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

Iridium is looking for a skilled and driven Senior Engineer to become a part of our Lab Support team. In the capacity of a Lab Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the optimal operation and maintenance of Iridium's intricate test laboratories. Your responsibilities will include verifying that the lab's functionality is upheld, facilitating the proper integration of new hardware and software, and ensuring that the system operates effectively to support ongoing testing activities. Success in this position requires a high degree of self-sufficiency, a strong eagerness to learn, and a commitment to the long-term success of your contributions. Familiarity with lab-related hardware and software, troubleshooting techniques, and a passion for developing technical skills are essential for excelling in this role.

What You'll Do:
  • Diagnose and repair electronic and RF equipment within the laboratory setting
  • Apply your technical knowledge in utilizing laboratory testing instruments such as network analyzers, traffic simulators driven by state machines, and protocol analyzers
  • Construct and manage RF, network, and various cables in the lab environment
  • Develop software solutions aimed at enhancing the stability and reliability of laboratory instruments
  • Streamline laboratory operations by automating the monitoring of lab equipment, reconfiguring hardware as needed, and addressing events that occur within the lab environment
  • Record, reproduce, and isolate any software or hardware defects identified during testing and in support of constellation operations
  • Integrate, maintain, and operate both hardware and software systems within the lab
  • Independently solve complex problems and offer creative solutions utilizing technical breath of knowledge and experience
  • Work collaboratively with your team to recognize risks and aid in the mitigation of identified risks and issues
  • Contribute to the updating and maintenance of technical product documentation


Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You'll Need to Succeed:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field
  • 8+ years' progressive experience in an Engineering role, preferably with RF hardware and software
  • Previous experience using laboratory test equipment (network analyzers, state machine driven traffic simulators, protocol analyzers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of programming languages to include Python, JAS, Java, and Matlab
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues to groups outside of your team or those who are unfamiliar with the topic
  • Have confidence and be able to easily build relationships with leadership and colleagues outside of your team
  • Possess an analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions and come up with out-of-the-box solutions
  • Be proactive in providing feedback and be enthusiastic in sharing your knowledge with others
  • Capable of prioritizing your own tasks and potentially the tasks of others while making sure deadlines are met
  • Possess effective Microsoft Windows and Office skills, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Teams

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:
  • Experience in systems integration
  • An understanding of software development (Agile) and production best practices
  • Knowledge of Linux and/or Unix operating systems
  • Knowledge of software management tools (JIRA, GIT, and/or Bamboo)
  • Knowledge of high-availability software and hardware systems

We'll Also Need You To:
  • Willing and able to travel up to 15 days annually
  • Willing and able to be on-call 24/7 for rotating duties to support operational issues
  • This position directly performs under, supports, or is exposed to a U.S. government contract. To comply with the requirements of that U.S. government contract, applicants for this position must be U.S. citizens

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
