The IPSSP will advocate on behalf of patients, while still being able to provide much of the care autonomously that the child needs according to his or her specialty class. When his field of expertise ends, his ability to navigate the healthcare system will enable him to coordinate and obtain the care each patient needs.

The ultimate role of the IPSSP will be to share their unique knowledge of the patient with other team members and, where necessary, ensure a meaningful, tailored and sensitive approach to treatment, truly embodying patient- and family-centered care.
