Why does the job exist?
This position will oversee the daily administration, management and operation of the (35) New Mexico State Parks. Ensure that park resources and facilities are maintained, and services are provided in accordance with Division standards. Manage, direct and supervise the (5) Regional Managers. Manage, direct and supervise the Safety, Loss Control & ADA Coordinator. Direct the development of, and adherence to policies & procedures, rules & regulations that govern park operations. Provides developmental guidance and support to various other Division programs, such as: Design/Development Bureau, Volunteers, Campground Reservations, Concessions and Marketing/Promotions. The strategic planning and decision based responsibilities of this position include long and short term planning by evaluating available budget, staffing, visitation & revenue trends, economic & climate conditions (drought), and several other factors in order to meet Park Management & Development Plan objectives & goals as well as Division and Department missions and goals.
How does it get done?
This position makes sure that the (35) New Mexico State Parks are administered, managed and operated up to established standards, and in accordance wilh applicable laws, agreements, rules & regulations, policies & procedures. The level of performance of the parks and staff is determined through park inspections, feedback from the program managers and olher Department/Division staff, and feedback from the visiting public. When it is determined that there is need for improved performance or deficiencies, this position directs and often becomes involved in courses of action to pick up performance and correct deficiencies.
Who are the customers?
Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.
Ideal Candidate
A Master's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years of professional level experience with a strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.
Minimum Qualification
A Master's degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling fourteen (14) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include management and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.
Employment Requirements
Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location. Extensive travel in state wide area. Weekend/holiday work required.
Working Conditions
This position may require you to sit for extended periods of time operating a computer terminal or other office equipment or doing administrative duties. Physical requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repeated hand/arm/finger motion, climbing, driving, typing, manual and finger dexterity, lifting up to 75 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds, carrying up to 75 pounds. The use of various hand and power tools is required. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. There is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals and petroleum products. Ability to communicate through speech is essential. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work, or return to work after normal hours.
